The college football community has been shell-shocked following the Clemson Tigers’ dismissal of four-star running back prospect Marquise Henderson. Henderson, born and raised in Anderson, South Carolina, was one of the team’s best and brightest prospective talents for the 2025 class before this unbelievable occurrence.
He came to Clemson early, participated in spring practices, and became the first Clemson player to be dismissed in almost two years. This decision raised many questions among fans and recruiting analysts, who are now trying to figure out what caused such a sudden change.
Marquise Henderson’s Clemson Dream Comes to Abrupt End
The Clemson community was left in complete dismay following the announcement, as Henderson was seen as the player who would lead the Tigers’ backfield for years to come. As per On3, Clemson issued a short statement that read as follows:
“Clemson has decided to dismiss Marquise Henderson from its program. We wish him the best as he moves forward.” Following the program’s typical approach to such matters, no specific reason was provided for the dismissal.

One of the key points of Henderson’s journey was his being presented with the Tigers’ offer in December 2023 and his commitment the very next day. The Belton-Honea Path High School standout was rated as the 161st player in the country and the 11th-ranked running back in the 2025 class.
His high school coach, Russell Blackston, previously praised Henderson’s impact, noting how he led the Bears to a 13-2 record and the state semifinals in 2024.
Clemson noticed Henderson after his remarkable high school performance, where he showed dominant statistics. The Clemson player’s stats reflect his game: more than 6,580 rushing yards, 86 touchdowns, and an average of 10.5 yards per carry.
In his senior season alone, he ran for 2,122 yards and 26 touchdowns while also catching 27 passes for 270 yards. These numbers made him the all-time leading rusher at Belton-Honea Path.
Head coach Dabo Swinney had previously expressed optimism about Henderson’s potential, telling reporters in December 2024, “He’s just a football player. He can do so many things he plays way bigger than he is he’s so fast.”
However, Henderson’s spring participation was limited due to a hamstring injury, with Swinney noting:
“Marquise has not really been able to do much this spring, so we really haven’t even gotten the first base with him.”

This dismissal mirrors the 2023 case of linebacker TJ Dottery (formerly TJ Dudley), who was removed from the program for violating team rules. Henderson is now eligible for the transfer portal despite the timing falling outside the standard entry window.
With fellow freshman Gideon Davidson expected to compete for playing time, Clemson’s running back depth takes a significant hit heading into the 2025 season.
