Heated Exchanges and Mishap Mark Taylor Fritz vs. Corentin Moutet Battle at Queen’s Club
Fritz, who entered the Queen’s Club Championships fresh off his Boss Open triumph, was considered a favorite to win Tuesday’s match against the French qualifier. He started strong, taking the first set 7-6(5), and even held a match point in the second set. However, Moutet battled back, winning the second set 7-6(7) to force a decider. Aiming for an upset, the World No. 89 fought hard, eventually prevailing 7-5, and finishing the match in two hours and 54 minutes.
However, a controversial incident unfolded between the two players during the changeover in the second set. Fritz and Moutet engaged in a heated exchange that appeared to escalate before the umpire intervened to defuse the situation. Fritz was seen smirking after the controversy ended.

Another incident occurred when Moutet served for the match at 5-4 in the third set. Fritz inadvertently fired a low, running forehand at Moutet’s face as he stood at the net. The Frenchman briefly went down, clutching his forehead in pain. Fritz immediately apologized, and fortunately, play resumed.

This was Moutet’s second win over a top-10 player on tour. His first came at the 2025 Italian Open, where he defeated World No. 9 Holger Rune.

Speaking after the match, Moutet expressed relief following his win over Fritz and was pleased to see his hard work finally rewarded after a frustrating start to the season.
“It’s my second [Top 10 win] this year and in my life. We’ve been working so hard with my team. I won three matches here [including two in qualifying], very close matches, and I’m so happy that it pays off in this tournament. We were waiting for that kind of result, a bit frustrated since the beginning of the year, because I was close but I never managed to win,” he said.
Fritz, who hadn’t dropped serve last week in Stuttgart, was broken twice by Moutet, who converted two of his four break-point opportunities. The Frenchman also thanked his team and family for their support.
“I’m so happy for myself and my team, because they invest so much in my career, supporting me so much. Even my family, everybody who’s behind this project. I’m very happy to give this win to them, to myself. It means a lot,” he added.
After handing Fritz his second opening-round defeat of the 2025 season, Moutet prepares to face home favorite Jacob Fearnley next.
