Michelsen, meanwhile, struggled to find his rhythm on clay before transitioning to grass. Apart from a quarterfinal appearance in Houston, the American suffered a first-round exit in Madrid, a second-round exit in Rome, and early exits in Geneva and at Roland Garros.
The 20-year-old began his grass-court campaign early at the BOSS Open, defeating Gael Monfils in the first round before falling to Justin Engel in straight sets in the second round. However, he took everyone by surprise in Halle by eliminating the fifth seed Francisco Cerúndolo in the first round.
