The Edmonton Oilers prepare for a pivotal Game 5 in the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers, and one question looms larger than any other: Who gets the start in goal?
The conversation has become louder and clearer: Analysts, fans, and even former NHL players strongly suggest that Calvin Pickard, not Stuart Skinner, should be the man between the pipes when the puck drops Saturday night. The debate intensified following Game 4, where the Oilers managed a thrilling 5-4 overtime win despite a rough start.
Is It Time for the Oilers to Fully Commit to Calvin Pickard?
Skinner started that game but was pulled after allowing three goals in the first period. It wasn’t a new trend; Skinner was also in net during Edmonton’s lopsided 6-1 loss in Game 3. While Skinner has shown promise in stretches during the playoffs, his recent performances have raised serious concerns about his ability to handle the Panthers’ fast-paced attack.
When Skinner was benched in Game 4, Pickard stepped in and stabilized the situation. He stopped everything thrown his way in the second and third periods and made two key saves in overtime that helped give Edmonton the chance to complete a stunning comeback.
On TSN’s “OverDrive,” analysts Bryan Hayes, Jamie McLennan, and Jonas Siegel didn’t mince words. McLennan, a former NHL goalie, was direct:
“He cannot start Game 5. Not next game. He just can’t. You’ve got to go Pickard now.”
McLennan praised Pickard’s poise, pointing out two massive overtime saves that were game-defining. “That Bennett one-timer? That’s an unbelievable save. I thought that puck was in. That moment kept them alive.”
Pickard now holds a perfect 7-0 record this postseason and has consistently looked composed, even under pressure. His calm demeanor and reliable play have sparked confidence not just in the fans but seemingly among his teammates as well.
Pickard had already taken over starting duties earlier in the playoffs before an injury against Vegas forced the Oilers to go back to Skinner. While Skinner played solid hockey against the Dallas Stars, his recent outings against Florida suggest he may be overwhelmed by the stage and speed of the Panthers’ attack.
The Oilers’ coaching staff, led by Kris Knoblauch, now faces a critical decision: Stick with the more experienced, original starter in Skinner or hand the reins to Pickard, the goaltender who’s been nearly flawless this postseason.
There’s no room for error now for the Oilers. With the series tied 2-2 and momentum up for grabs, a poor goaltending decision could swing the Stanley Cup Final out of Edmonton’s hands.
Pickard may not have the name recognition, but right now he has something even more important: consistency. Heading into Game 5, it’s clear that if the Oilers want the best chance to win, they may need to continue riding the hot glove.
