John Calipari’s latest roster move at Arkansas, signing 7’0″ Bosnian center Elmir Dzafic, signals a clear shift in his recruiting philosophy.
Once known for building teams around “one-and-done” freshmen, Calipari seeks a blend of high-upside perimeter talent and physically mature big men. Dzafic’s arrival is the clearest evidence yet of this new approach.
John Calipari’s “Grown Men” Philosophy Strikes Again With Elmir Dzafic Signing
The turning point in Arkansas Razorbacks basketball head coach John Calipari’s recruiting mindset was captured during his spring media tour, when he stated he was looking for “high-upside players.”
On a recent episode of the “Aaron Torres Sports Podcast,” the analyst explained how the “Hawgs'” coach was attacking recruiting.
“It feels like his recruiting philosophy is now we’re going to go with the high upside players, NBA prospects on the wings, and the guard spots,” Torres said. “And then down low, we’re getting grown men. We’re getting grown men who can throw people around. It was Jonas Adu last year. This year it’s Malik Yunan and Nick Pringle.”
This blunt declaration explains why Arkansas targeted Elmir Dzafic, a 7’0” Bosnian center with professional experience in the Adriatic League. Dzafic’s profile, a “physically imposing, internationally seasoned center ready to battle in the paint,” fits Calipari’s blueprint for “grown men” anchoring the frontcourt.
Calipari’s new tactic has been the offspring of a necessity. His Kentucky teams, which were centered around the pre-NBA freshmen, frequently faced the lack of experience and physical qualities required to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament. Situations like the defeat by an underdog team like Oakland in 2024 staged this fact.
“The lesson was ‘You can’t do this now with seven freshmen.’ You just can’t,” Calipari admitted in May, referencing the physical mismatch against older, seasoned opponents.
Calipari mixes elite freshmen with veteran transfers and international bigs. The Razorbacks will have five-star guards Darius Acuff Jr. and Meleek Thomas in the backcourt, and it appears the frontcourt will be filled with veteran transfers such as Nick Pringle and international recruits like Dzafic from Bosnia and Kari Rtail from Lithuania.

Dzafic, who averaged 13.2 points and 10.4 rebounds at the U18 European Championship, brings a rugged style and international experience that Calipari covets. His addition continues a trend.
Last year, Calipari recruited Zvonimir Ivisic, a 7’0″ Croatian center now at Illinois. Calipari appears to be more invested in recruiting oversized kids from abroad to fill out his frontcourt.
Along with the way the transfer portal has completely turned the game inside out and with the NIL era upon us, Calipari now has to recruit older, physically developed players as well as recruit star freshmen in combination with players who are physically more developed (the “grown men” Calipari refers to) to handle the demands of college basketball.
Dzafic’s signing was no coincidence. It is a result of Calipari expressing that he will emphasize recruiting physically mature men.
There is a paradigm and culture shift within college basketball. Calipari’s realistic understanding of what it takes to win in March has placed Arkansas into a team that can have an immediate impact and sustainability.
