While Tom Brady’s NFL story is a legend overall, its final act was a cautionary tale. Near the end of a massively successful NFL career, the quarterback appeared to struggle transitioning into a new post-NFL life as he retired and returned within the span of an offseason.
However, Brady eventually found a way to fill up the calendar and now appears as busy as ever as a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders and the top commentator at Fox. That said, he didn’t settle into the Fox role instantly.
Tom Brady Hints at Early Discomfort in Commentator Role
Speaking in an interview with RG, Brady was quick to praise the team but admitted he didn’t hit the ground running in his view. “Amazing, the best team at Fox. I love communicating about the sport, and I got more comfortable as the season progressed. This year will be the best yet,” he said.
Life is full of twists and turns, and switching careers after decades can prove challenging. However, after some of the 2024 season had passed, the former New England Patriots quarterback managed to settle into his new role.
It was a big year with high stakes to do so as well, as Fox broadcast the Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. Still, Brady appeared to be ready for the stage.
Brady Spells Out Subjective Criteria for Success as an NFL Commentator
The former quarterback is the definition of someone wanting to win. Of course, winning as a commentator is very different than winning as a quarterback. Brady said as much in an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, according to Fox Sports in a February 5 post.
“There’s no scoreboard for us,” Brady said. “Did we feel we approached the game the right way, and were we prepared? Ultimately, it comes down to two things: Was I confident in what I said, and did I enjoy myself? I think if those are yes, then we did a good job. I’m very excited for what’s ahead.”
Before that, Brady didn’t know what to expect in his Fox broadcasting debut, and it exhausted him. Speaking in a “Last Week” video posted on his YouTube Channel on September 12 via Deadline, Brady claimed the buildup to his debut was the tiring thing about it.
“I’m not tired from the game, just tired from the buildup,” Brady said. “The emotional energy, a lot of emotional buildup, and not quite knowing how things are going to go.”
Of course, with his broadcasting debut long since left in the rear-view mirror, this season won’t have the same level of buildup.
