Mirra Andreeva Got ‘Screwed’ by the Umpires in Shocking French Open QF Exit, Claims Rennae Stubbs

Rennae Stubbs voiced her support for Mirra Andreeva after the Russian lost a point due to a controversial line call in the French Open quarterfinals.

French wild card Loïs Boisson continued her fairytale run at the 2025 French Open with a stunning straight-sets victory over sixth seed Mirra Andreeva. However, a contentious line call in the second set made headlines. Former Australian player Rennae Stubbs asserted that the Russian was wrongly denied that point at such a crucial stage of the match.

Rennae Stubbs Rallies Behind Mirra Andreeva Following Contentious Line Call at French Open QF

The opening set was fiercely competitive, with both players battling hard before Boisson edged it 7-6(6) in the tiebreak. While the Frenchwoman had the crowd firmly in her corner, Andreeva had to contend with jeers and even applause when she made errors.

The match featured several contentious moments, one of which occurred in the second set at 3-3 (30-0) when Boisson halted play, believing Andreeva’s shot had landed out. The chair umpire inspected the mark and ruled the ball out, adding that she went down because Boisson had stopped the point. Andreeva, meanwhile, couldn’t overturn the decision, despite engaging in a heated exchange with the umpire.

In the wake of the controversial incident, women’s doubles legend Stubbs criticized the chair umpire, insisting the ball had landed inside and that Andreeva had been ‘screwed’. She also called for the introduction of electronic line calling, a feature still absent at Roland Garros.

“3-3 0-30 Andreeva got screwed. U clearly see the ball push the clay off the line. Mirra actually said to the umpire, “the clay went off the line” & she was right, there was another ball mark there & that’s the one the used to say out. WHEN ARE WE GETTING ELECTRONIC LINE CALLING!” she wrote on X.

The 54-year-old later shared a clip showing where the ball landed and reiterated her stance in favor of electronic line calling at the French Open.

“FFT will take this down but i will put it up and u can clearly see the ball hit the line. FFT GET THE ELC!” she wrote.

It is worth noting that Andreeva led 3-0 in the second set; however, Boisson came back strong to win the set 6-3. As a result, she made it into the French Open semifinals for the first time in her career.

As noted, the quarterfinal meeting between Andreeva and Boisson was marred by several contentious moments. While it turned into a dream evening for the home favorite, the Russian had to struggle with a hostile crowd.

The second set turned tense for Andreeva, who led 3-0 before Boisson won three straight games and went up 30-0 in the seventh. Frustrated, Andreeva slammed a ball into the stands, drawing loud boos from the crowd. Consequently, the 18-year-old was handed a code violation from the chair umpire due to ball abuse.

Notably, Andreeva had complained about the noisy crowd to the chair umpire earlier. However, the persistent jeering eventually wore her down. While the Russian suffered an unexpected heartbreak, Boisson became the first woman wild card to reach the French Open semifinals in the Open era. The 22-year-old will face the USA’s Coco Gauff in the semifinals on Thursday.
