As OTAs continue across the league, the newly acquired WR1 for the New England Patriots, Stefon Diggs, has been the talk of the town throughout the football world, but not for his play on the field.
Heavy controversy surrounded Diggs when a viral video, which showed the veteran wide receiver partying on a boat alongside three women while disturbing a baggie containing a mysterious pink substance, began circulating.
Following the video’s viral success, fans began to speculate whether Diggs’ time in Foxborough would be coming to an end before it even started. However, following an update from NFL insider Ian Rapoport on the situation, that may not be the case.
Patriots Have No Plans To Release Stefon Diggs
Rapoport reported that the Patriots have no plans to release Diggs, whom they recently signed to a three-year, $63 million contract through free agency this offseason.
From The Insiders on @NFLNetwork: The #Patriots have no plans to release Stefon Diggs. They have high hopes for him… and him showing up to OTAs was a good thing. https://t.co/bcDBI6T4EY

Rapoport went on in his report to say that Diggs was indeed present at voluntary OTAs, stating that Diggs’s appearance for the first time felt about as mandatory as it could be.
Since Mike Vrabel, the Patriots’ newest head coach, told reporters that he was aware of the viral video containing his newest receiver, rumors began to swirl that the possibility of Diggs being cut was indeed on the table. However, since the video, it has been reported that Diggs has taken the correct steps with his coaching staff and teammates, ensuring things trend in the right direction.
Diggs showing up and putting in work at voluntary OTAs is significant, not just for his image as a star NFL receiver, but for everyone within the Patriots organization. A viral video casting doubt on a player the team invested $63 million in is the last thing fans, or anyone tied to the franchise, want to see.
The Patriots have given Diggs a lifeline, and now he must work even harder to repay them for that lifeline. Not to mention all the money they have invested. Diggs has already put in a lot of work after successfully passing his medical exam following the torn ACL he suffered midway through the 2024 season. It is even more critical that he make smart decisions, given how hard he has worked to earn the big contract the Patriots gave him.
Diggs Key to Patriots’ Breakout Hopes
The Patriots struggled in 2024 with a record of 4-13, putting them at the bottom of the AFC East. However, rookie quarterback Drake Maye showed flashes of greatness with little to no real weapons to utilize. Now Maye has been gift-wrapped a proven NFL receiver with a WR1 past. If Diggs can stay motivated and healthy, the Patriots have the potential to build on their poor 2024 season and take the proper steps on their way out of this rebuilding phase.
If the Patriots intend to shock some teams in 2025, Diggs will certainly be a main factor in their success. But the street goes both ways. If Diggs fails to do either of those things, the offense could struggle to find consistency, which in turn will hurt any chance of a breakout season in New England.
The Patriots invested heavily in Diggs, and now they rely on him, which means keeping his head out of trouble. If he can do that, the veteran receiver could revitalize his career as he pairs up with one of the league’s brightest young stars at the quarterback position.
