American WTA star Madison Keys recently shared her thoughts about the ongoing scheduling controversy at Roland Garros. The Australian Open champion highlighted a need for better slots on the women’s side of the event.
The controversy brewed after players like Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur, and others highlighted the disparity between the prime slot allotment for men and women.
Madison Keys Drops Candid Response to the French Open Scheduling Controversy
Players, including Ons Jabeur and Coco Gauff, recently criticized the French Open for not scheduling women’s matches during prime-time night sessions. Taking to social media platforms, they mentioned how this showed unfair treatment to women’s sports, as almost all of the night matches featured men.
On being asked about a response to the situation, American WTA star Madison Keys offered a unique take, making it clear that the French Open is the only event where discussions like these find place. In a press conference after securing a position in the fourth round, she said:
“I think women typically have night matches everywhere else, so I don’t think it’s a point of discussion at other tournaments. It’s obviously been a hot topic here as there’s only one match, I think that it’s much different that other tournaments, but I think women’s matches are very entertaining and they have great value and they deserve to be the feature match.”
Keys Expresses Excitement After Taking Down Sofia Kenin at the French Open
WTA star Madison Keys couldn’t hold her excitement back after securing a commendable 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Sofia Kenin. In a post-match interview, the Australian Open champion mentioned how she allowed enough room for her rival to dominate, citing the same as the reason behind dropping the first set.
“I was letting her (Kenin) dictate a bit too much, so I took a few steps back on the rallies to give myself space to swing and hit and move her around on her serve. Yeah, it’s great to see another day,” she said.
Summing up the overall experience of her third-round match, she added:
“That was a great experience. It was an amazing atmosphere with so much support here.”
Madison Keys currently stands on a 7-2 win-loss record in the ongoing clay court season. Her 10th match, scheduled for 2nd June, will decide her entry into the quarterfinals.
