The New York Jets were looking for a complete franchise makeover after a disastrous tenure with Aaron Rodgers. Replacing him with Justin Fields and appointing Aaron Glenn as the new head coach were the first steps towards that change.
However, Fields’ contract makes him an expendable option rather than the long-term solution; 2025 feels like a prove-it year for this new core before the team decides its future in the upcoming offseason. One analyst, though, believes that the future might not involve their new starting quarterback.
Could the Jets End the Justin Fields Experiment After 1 Season?
With the Rodgers experiment ending with a torn Achilles in Year 1 and a second year with just five wins, not to mention the off-field drama that was a constant during the two years, the Jets want some stability for the franchise.
They gave Fields a two-year contract worth $40 million with just half of that sum guaranteed. The amount of the deal, alongside the length of the contract, suggests that it will be up to the former Pittsburgh Steelers starter to prove his worth to the franchise.
However, the latest mock draft from PFSN for 2026 has the Jets finishing as the second-worst team in the league, thereby earning the second-overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The result essentially implies that the Fields experiment hasn’t worked out.
As a result, Jacob Infante has them going after LaNorris Sellers out of South Carolina to find their long-term solution at the quarterback position, potentially.
“Though LaNorris Sellers isn’t the consensus QB1 in the 2026 class, he might have the best physical tools of any quarterback in college football. He’s strong-armed, athletic, tough to sack, and more accurate than he gets credit for,” Infante said.

Last year, he added 2,534 yards and 18 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 674 yards and seven touchdowns. The athleticism, visibly apparent in his ground game, is an underrated aspect of his game, especially with most top-tier quarterbacks having some dynamism to their game.

For New York, it will be their third quarterback drafted in the first round over the last decade. With the last two names, Zach Wilson and Sam Darnold, not paying dividends for the Jets, they will be hoping that Sellers can finally break that curse.
The 2025 season could then become a test for Glenn to see if he can replicate his defensive genius that made him such a coveted asset as the defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions. Last year, they ranked 15th on PFSN’s Defense+ metric, a number that Glenn would like to improve.
