Taylor Fritz didn’t hold back from delivering a cheeky jab at fellow ATP pro Casper Ruud following the Norwegian’s lopsided quarterfinal loss to Jannik Sinner at the 2025 Italian Open.
The American tennis star poked fun at Ruud’s drubbing in Rome, where the Norwegian managed to win just one game in two brutal sets against the top-seeded Italian.
Taylor Fritz Teased Casper Ruud’s Quarterfinal Loss With Witty Social Media Comment
Ruud recently wrapped up his sixth appearance at the Italian Open, a tournament where he’s historically performed well, with three semifinal runs. This year, the former World No. 2 entered the draw as the sixth seed and advanced past Alexander Bublik, Matteo Berrettini (walkover), and Jaume Munar. His campaign, however, came to a screeching halt in the quarterfinals when he was dismantled by Sinner 6-0, 6-1 in just over one hour.
In contrast, Fritz had a disappointing run of his own in Rome. Despite coming in as the fourth seed, he crashed out early, losing in straight sets to fellow American Marcos Giron in his opening match. The World No. 4 has since shifted his focus to the ATP 250 event in Geneva, where he is the top seed and will kick off his campaign on May 20 against either Jaume Munar or Quentin Halys.
Ruud, the recently crowned Madrid Open champion, took the loss in stride and posted a graceful message on Instagram following his defeat.
“Arrivederci, Roma. Not the result I wanted, but the love from the crowd made it worth it. Congrats to Jannik Sinner and his team,” he wrote in the caption.
Fritz chimed in with a tongue-in-cheek reply:
“You almost had him,” Taylor Fritz commented under Ruud’s post, making a sarcastic remark about his uncompetitive crashout.

Top seed and local favorite Jannik Sinner, who recently returned from a three-month suspension, has been dominant across the fortnight. He cruised past Mariano Navone, Jesper de Jong, 17th seed Francisco Cerundolo, sixth seed Casper Ruud, and 11th seed Tommy Paul to reach the final, where he faces third seed Carlos Alcaraz for the 11th time on the ATP Tour.
Casper Ruud Shared His Thoughts on His Quarterfinal Loss to Jannik Sinner
Casper Ruud’s quarterfinal loss to Jannik Sinner in Rome extended the Italian’s perfect head-to-head record against him to 4-0. Reflecting on the defeat, Ruud commented:
“It doesn’t feel so bad, honestly,” Ruud said. “I think it was more fun than anything, even though I lost. You just look at the guy and say, ‘This is kind of next-level sh*t’ — excuse my language — but I don’t know what else to say. It was almost fun to witness at the same time.”
“Of course, I wish it were a closer match. I wish I could have given the people and the fans a longer, closer match. I think that I was there ready to play, but he was just even readier. Every area of my good shots he matched with an even better back. I couldn’t re-answer with a better shot. That was just the story of the match.”
