‘I Would Be P**sed Off’ – Hall of Famer Chris Pronger Goes Ballistic on Maple Leafs’ Callous Attitude

The Toronto Maple Leafs were crushed 6-1 by the Florida Panthers in Game 5 of their playoff series Wednesday night, prompting strong reactions across the NHL world.

The most scathing came from Hall of Famer Chris Pronger, who didn’t hold back during ESPN’s coverage.

Chris Pronger Slams Maple Leafs’ Emotional Disconnect

“The lack of emotion I see… I would be pissed off,” Pronger said bluntly.

“I would be sitting there dejected, at a loss for words, as to how we just laid an egg in the biggest game of potentially their careers,” Pronger added.

The loss put Toronto 3-2 behind in the series, effectively on the brink of elimination. The Leafs opened the series strong, winning the first two games. But they’ve since dropped three straight, two in Florida and then the humiliating Game 5 at home.

Pronger zeroed in on what he called a complete absence of emotion and accountability. “The body language that we saw, the effort, their inability to stop the mistakes, they did not play a mistake-free game,” he said.

Other NHL legends joined in the criticism. Mark Messier called it “the worst performance we’ve seen in a long time in a game that had so many implications.” He emphasized the need for a response in Game 6, not necessarily a win, but a performance that shows heart.

P.K. Subban was equally unsparing. He labeled the Leafs “the definition of mediocrity” and suggested major changes could be necessary if they lose the series. “A 6-0 loss in front of your fans is embarrassing. This team’s better than that, this can’t happen. If they lose this series, there has to be a change. There has to be a change in leadership there,” he said.

Subban also questioned the decisions of team president Brendan Shanahan, pointing to repeated playoff failures over the last two decades.

The scene at Scotiabank Arena echoed those frustrations. Fans booed loudly. Some threw jerseys on the ice. Many left early. The disappointment wasn’t limited to the analysts, it was shared by the entire fanbase.

Chris Pronger, Other NHL Legends Torch Maple Leafs After Game 5

During a broadcast break in the Oilers-Golden Knights game, ESPN analysts took turns dissecting Toronto’s meltdown. Chris Pronger again led the charge, saying, “Toronto did not come to play.” He added that a lack of leadership and execution is evident across the board.

Mark Messier argued that Toronto faces a fork in the road. “This was so devastating for the Maple Leafs that they completely quit on each other, themselves and each other, or it’s going to be so incredibly embarrassing for them as a team that they’re going to rally around each other, fight back, and come up with their best performance of the year,” he said. Messier stressed that how they respond matters more than whether they advance.

Subban shifted focus to the long-term outlook. He brought up the Leafs’ two playoff series wins in 21 years and criticized the front office’s inability to build a team that can handle pressure moments.

Fans didn’t stay silent, either. Social media was filled with outrage, sarcasm, and even mock legal ads joking about emotional trauma caused by the Leafs. Mitch Marner, in particular, drew heavy fire for his subdued post-game demeanor and playoff production – just 13 goals in 68 career games.

Toronto now faces a must-win Game 6, both to stay alive and to prove to fans, and themselves, that they still care.

After a season filled with hope, the Leafs are once again fighting the same old ghosts. And Chris Pronger, for one, isn’t sugarcoating it.
