The New York Giants are coming off their worst season since 1974, finishing a dismal 3-14 in 2024. They struggled mightily on both sides of the ball, ranking 31st in points scored, 30th in total yards, 21st in scoring defense, and 24th in yards allowed.
Offensively, the Giants had difficulty moving the ball both through the air and on the ground, finishing 28th in passing yards, 32nd in passing touchdowns, 23rd in rushing yards, and 20th in rushing touchdowns.
In an effort to stabilize the quarterback position, New York signed veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, and used a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to select Jaxson Dart.
However, the running back position was not addressed until Day 3, when they drafted Cam Skattebo in the fourth round—a move that could signal the end of Devin Singletary’s tenure with the team.
Giants’ Devin Singletary Named As Potential Trade Candidate
Following last month’s 2025 NFL Draft, PFN’s Sterling Xie revealed one potential candidate to be cut or traded from each of the NFL’s 32 teams. He predicted that Singletary, who joined the Giants on a three-year, $16.5 million contract last offseason, could be on the verge of being traded or released from the team, writing:
“Signed to be the stopgap starter after Saquon Barkley’s departure, Devin Singletary never got off the ground in his first season with the New York Giants. Rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr. surpassed Singletary on the depth chart, leaving the veteran in a tenuous spot after a career-low 437 rushing yards. Singletary’s place on the team looks even shakier after the Giants picked Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo in the fourth round.”
Xie added: “While there are questions about his long speed and if his bull-in-a-china-shop play style will hold up against NFL defenders, Skattebo comes as a polished prospect who can contribute right away on all three downs. Coupled with Tracy’s impressive rookie season, the Giants don’t have an obvious role for Singletary. He’s never provided special teams value, playing 23 special teams snaps during the entirety of his six-year career.”
Singletary had the worst season of his professional career in 2024 as he averaged less than 4.0 yards per carry for the first time. He ran for just 437 yards and four touchdowns on 113 carries, while adding 119 receiving yards on 21 receptions.
“Singletary would only leave behind $4.75 million in dead money this year and $1.25 million next year if the Giants move on after June 1, which feels like a plausible outcome if they can’t salvage a minor trade return,” said Xie in his article following the draft.
It is unclear what type of interest the third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft would generate on the trade market. If the Giants are unable to find a trade partner, however, it appears that they could release Singletary.
