Taylor Fritz was able to keep the spectators at the 2025 Madrid Open calm after a massive power outage affected Spain, Portugal, and other parts of Europe. The blackout disrupted the electronic line calling systems at the tournament and it also led to the suspension of several matches.
One of the ATP matches that was interrupted at the Masters 1000 event in Madrid by the power outage was the third-round clash between 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov and qualifier Jacob Fearnley.
Taylor Fritz’s Practice Session Draws in Crowd at Madrid Open 2025 Amid Blackout
Fritz is seeded third at the 2025 Madrid Open and began his campaign in the second round following a first-round bye. He cruised past Christopher O’Connell 6-1, 6-4 in his opening match before securing a fourth-round berth after his opponent Benjamin Bonzi retired when both players had won a set each.
The power outage on Monday, Apr. 28, forced the cancellation of matches at the clay-c ourt tournament, with players resorting to practice sessions instead. Fritz, among others, took to the courts for practice, attracting a sizable crowd eager to witness the players in action.

Taylor Fritz Reacted to Blackout in Madrid
The massive power outage that affected Spain, Portugal, and parts of Europe drew various reactions from players, critics, and spectators. Among them was Fritz, who humorously suggested that the solution to restoring power might have been as simple as unplugging and plugging back in the power source.
It was reported that the power has supposedly been restored, and the matches that were postponed on Apr. 28, will take place on Apr. 29.
“Have they tried unplugging and plugging it back in ?” Fritz posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Following his win over Bonzi in the third round of the Madrid Open, Fritz is set to take on 14th seed Casper Ruud in the fourth round.
Ruud kicked off his campaign in Madrid in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. He defeated Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 6-4, and 23rd seed Sebastian Korda 6-3, 6-3 in the second and third rounds, respectively, to book his place in the Round of 16.
Fritz and Ruud have met three times on the ATP Tour previously, with the Norwegian emerging victorious in two of those encounters. Their most recent clash was in the fourth round of last year’s US Open, where the American bagged a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory. The winner of this match will take on either ninth seed Daniil Medvedev or 31st seed Brandon Nakashima in the Madrid Open quarterfinals.
