Shemar Stewart’s NFL Draft Scouting Report

An upside gamble in every sense of the word, Shemar Stewart has become one of the most polarizing prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft. At 6’5″, 267 pounds, with over 34″ arms, he tested as the most athletic EDGE prospect ever, with a 4.59 40-yard dash, a 40″ vertical, and a 10’11” broad jump.

On the flip side, he never eclipsed 1.5 sacks in a single season at the collegiate level, and has startlingly low production rates as both a pass-rusher and run-stopper. The tape tells a story you might expect: Stewart has rare explosiveness, twitch, and energy for his size, and can channel his traits into awesome power, but he’s also very inconsistent and uncontrolled right now.

At the very least, he can play from different alignments and play contain, and at his max potential, his ceiling is as high as can be — but it also may take him at least a couple years to near that ceiling.

Shemar Stewart’s Latest NFL Draft Projections

PFSN’s Ian Cummings projected Stewart to be drafted 16th in his most recent 7-round 2025 NFL Mock Draft.

Cummings said, “The Arizona Cardinals could go in one of at least five different directions in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. But if a one-of-one physical talent, at a premium position like EDGE, is still on the board, it’s tough to shrug at that opportunity. Shemar Stewart is the player in question.

“Stewart is the most talented EDGE to hit the circuit since Myles Garrett. Unlike Garrett, however, the positives of Stewart’s profile largely start and end with his gifts.

“Stewart needs to improve his pass-rush execution and run defense discipline, but he and Josh Sweat can become a deadly duo in time. In an ecosystem with Sweat, Dalvin Tomlinson, Calais Campbell, and Darius Robinson, he could reach his ceiling.”

6. Donovan Ezeiruaku, Boston College

1. Abdul Carter, Penn State

In recent memory, there hasn’t been an EDGE prospect more polarizing than Shemar Stewart. Stewart never eclipsed more than 1.5 sacks in a given CFB season, but his generational athletic profile has him projected as early as the top-12 picks.

At 6’5″, 267 pounds, with over 34″ arms, Stewart dazzled with a 4.59 40-yard dash, 40″ vertical, and 10’11” broad jump at the NFL Combine. That athleticism shows up on tape. Stewart rockets off the snap, erases gaps in pursuit, and can channel awesome power.

Stewart plays with the speed, power, and twitch of a Super Serum patient, but his pass-rush execution is woefully inconsistent. His floor in run defense is high enough, but you’re ultimately drafting Stewart for his upside as an unequivocal game-wrecker down the road.
