Will Mike McCarthy Get Another Head Coaching Job? NFL Analyst Weighs In On the Ex-Cowboys HC’s Future

Mike McCarthy was fired by the Cowboys after a poor run in 2024, and one NFL analyst isn't sure he will get another head coaching gig in the NFL.

The Dallas Cowboys parted ways with head coach Mike McCarthy in early January 2025 after a tumultuous 7-10 season. He went 49-35 in five seasons with the Cowboys, going 12-5 in the second, third, and fourth seasons but earning no more than one playoff win in those three appearances.
Last season was his worst, and after being relieved of his duties, McCarthy decided he would step away from the NFL for the 2025 season and instead focus on the 2026 hiring. But after his poor performance with the Cowboys, will McCarthy even get another head coaching job? NFL analyst John Middlekauff isn’t entirely sure.

Mike McCarthy Getting Another HC Position In NFL Uncertain

In Dallas, McCarthy’s playoff inconsistency and defensive shortcomings, including a league-worst red-zone efficiency in 2024, ultimately sealed his fate. Penalties and turnovers became persistent issues, starkly contrasting the disciplined play expected from a marquee franchise. And Middlekauff wouldn’t bet even $1000 that he would get another head coaching job in the NFL.

“I think I’d probably say it’s a coin flip. I wouldn’t bet $1,000 that he’s going to be a head coach in 2026, but I wouldn’t bet against it either,” he said on the latest episode of the “3 & Out” podcast.

Middlekauff agreed with the reports that McCarthy is just staying away from the NFL for 2025 and will apply for the interviews later on. However, he felt that McCarthy getting a job would depend on who the other candidates are available in the market.

“It’s just probably a stay away, I would say he’s definitely going to interview next year for some of these jobs. I think it also will depend on who else is out there, you know Ben Johnson’s now off the market, Liam Coen’s off the market. He would have been a guy number one target again, probably. Who are the top guys that are in the mix? Like, would you rather hire Robert Saleh or Mike McCarthy? Like, those are the type of questions people are going to be asking themselves.”

McCarthy started his NFL coaching career as the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive quality control coach in 1993. Two seasons later, he was promoted to the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach in 1995, where he worked until 1998.

McCarthy then spent a year as the Green Bay Packers’ quarterbacks coach in 1999, where he would later earn his first head coaching gig. He was Green Bay’s head coach from 2006 until he was fired after Week 13 of the 2018 season.

His 125 wins as Packers head coach are the second-most by a coach in franchise history, behind Curly Lambeau (209). He took a year off in 2019 before becoming the head coach of the Cowboys, and after exiting Dallas, he will hope another year away brings another head coaching job in 2026.
