Miami Dolphins Practice Report, Injury Update: Marcus Maye SZN?

Based on Thursday's injury report, Marcus Maye is in line to start Week 5 for the Miami Dolphins with safety Jordan Poyer hobbled by a shin injury.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Jaelan Phillips and Tua Tagovailoa aside — and yes, those are admittedly two very large carve outs — the Miami Dolphins are actually pretty healthy heading into Week 5.

Beyond Phillips, who was on the 53 when practice began but placed on injured reserve late in the day, the only other active roster Dolphins player who did not practice Thursday was safety Jordan Poyer.

Poyer seems likely to miss Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots, meaning the Dolphins should get their longest look yet at Marcus Maye, who has been a role player since signing with the team this offseason.

Miami Dolphins Practice Report

Maye has been on the field for just 56 of a possible 227 plays this fall, but his playing time had increased even before Poyer’s injury.

The Dolphins have broadened their use of a three-safety alignment the last couple of weeks, but with Poyer presumably out through the bye, they’re more concerned with having a capable replacement in base.

Maye has had a quiet start to his career, totaling nine tackles in four games. He hasn’t yet been targeted through the air.

So it’s unclear what the Dolphins will get from Maye, although there’s reason to believe he actually might be an upgrade in coverage.

Poyer has not met expectations this year, allowing eight completions on nine targets with 15.1 yards per target and 17 yards per completion allowed. His passer rating against is 118.7.

Thursday’s practice did bring some good news for Miami, however. Running back Raheem Mostert, offensive tackle Terron Armstead, and cornerback Kendall Fuller all participated in Thursday’s padded practice after missing the team’s Week 4 loss to the Tennessee Titans.
