Meet Nick Sorensen, 49ers Defensive Coordinator

Nick Sorensen is the 49ers’ defensive coordinator.

A former NFL safety, Sorensen began his coaching career in 2013 with the Seahawks as an assistant special teams coach, a position he held through the 2015 season. He stayed in Seattle for an additional five seasons, working as an assistant defensive backs coach in 2016 and a secondary coach from 2017 through 2020.

Sorensen then joined the Jaguars as a special teams coordinator in 2021 before working as a defensive assistant the next season.

Sorensen, 46, was born in Florida but grew up in Virginia. He played his college ball at Virginia Tech and went undrafted in 2001.

How Long Has Nick Sorensen Been the 49ers’ Defensive Coordinator?

Sorensen joined the 49ers in 2023 as a defensive pass game specialist and nickels coach under defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. After Wilks’ firing last winter, Sorensen was named San Francisco’s next defensive coordinator.
