Where Did Alt’s Football Career Start?

Alt was born in North Oaks, Minn., to former Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman John Alt.

He attended Totino-Grace High School, a private Catholic school in Fridley, Minn. According to his MaxPreps page, in high school, Alt played tight end, offensive line, as well as defensive end.

He was also a member of the varsity basketball team.

Alt was a four-star recruit and received offers from Minnesota, Iowa State, Notre Dame, and Rutgers.

Revisiting Alt’s College Career

Alt committed to play college football at Notre Dame, where he was a mechanical engineering major.

As a true freshman, Alt spent time playing on the offensive line and tight end. He would have to switch jerseys on the sideline from No. 45 to No. 76 depending on if he lined up as a lineman or tight end. His freshman season was a success, appearing in all 13 games and starting in the Fiesta Bowl.

Consistency was key throughout Alt’s college career, as he started all 13 games during his sophomore season at left tackle.

During his final season with the Irish, Alt played in all 12 games, paving the way for one of the most prolific offenses in Notre Dame history.

Alt’s Potential in the NFL

Alt’s father, John, was a first-round pick who enjoyed a successful 13-year career with the Chiefs. Joe is following a very similar path.

After a successful career with the Irish, Alt is projected to be the first offensive lineman selected.

Alt’s physical traits are what primes him to be a franchise left tackle. His 6’8″, 315-pound frame towers over defenders with impressive length and athleticism at that size.

Pro Football Network draft analyst Ian Cummings has Alt rated as his No. 1 offensive tackle prospect due to a fruitful 2023 season with Notre Dame.

“Joe Alt grades out as a top-five prospect on my 2024 NFL Draft board, and he’s my personal choice for OT1 over Penn State’s Olu Fashanu and Alabama’s JC Latham,” Cummings wrote in Alt’s scouting report.

“At 6’8″, 315 pounds, he has a towering frame with impressive length, and his tape shows off uncanny athleticism and recovery capacity at that size. Alt is an extremely explosive and free-flowing athlete with unnatural foot speed and agility. He couples that with absurd flexibility and bend.

“With his flexibility, Alt is not only able to recover ground and keep his balance with ease, but he’s also able to acquire leverage effortlessly, align himself through reps, and absorb power by distributing his weight properly.”
