Courtland Sutton’s Dynasty Value | Fantasy Outlook, Ranking, and More

After Courtland Sutton scored 10 TDs in 2023, can dynasty managers really expect better results from the Broncos WR heading into the 2024 NFL season?

The Broncos’ decision to part ways with veteran quarterback Russell Wilson doesn’t necessarily improve the situation under center for the fantasy pass-catchers projected to have a large role in the Denver passing game this year. This puts dynasty shareholders of veteran WR Courtland Sutton in a tricky spot heading into the 2024 NFL season.

What does Sutton’s dynasty value look like entering his seventh season in the league?

Courtland Sutton’s Dynasty Outlook

In direct comparison to his previous three seasons, Sutton produced a nice bounce-back campaign in 2023 with a career-high 10 touchdown receptions. Yet, if we consider a WR35 fantasy finish a bounce-back year, what type of fantasy ceiling can we truly get excited about for him in 2024?

These two realizations could comfort rational dynasty managers about how to appropriately value Sutton moving forward. After adding Josh Reynolds via free agency and the speedy Troy Franklin in the NFL Draft as competition for next season, he is still likely to be the top pass-catching option for the Broncos in 2024.

Yet, the real unknown is what to expect under center for Denver this year. This offseason, the team traded for Zach Wilson and selected Oregon QB Bo Nix at No. 12 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft to join Jarrett Stidham in the quarterback room for this year. This makes the quality and quantity of his targets a bit of an unknown at the moment.

Last year, he had his best fantasy since 2019, where he finished at the WR19 in full-PPR formats — which is encouraging — but that still feels like an eternity ago, and his 10 TDs came on just 90 targets this year, which doesn’t feel like a sustainable rate. Additionally, his 59 receptions ranked 59th in the league, while his 772 receiving yards ranked 44th in the league.

To give you an idea of how unusually high his target-to-TD ratio was in 2023, of the seven players who caught 10+ TDs last year, Sutton was the only player with fewer than 100 targets.

There is some optimism that Sutton could have another WR2/3 season in 2024 with a healthy target share, but his being 29 years old and having a subpar quarterback under center doesn’t exactly give him an exciting fantasy ceiling in 2024.

Honestly, now is a pretty ideal time to start taking offers for Sutton. Sure, his improved play this year wasn’t earth-shattering, but I’d argue his 2023 production may be the best we get from him for the rest of his career.

There were whispers that Sutton could be dealt to a different team during the NFL Draft, but those rumors never materialized into anything of substance. This leaves Sutton with a good but not great fantasy outlook heading into the season.

Sure, you could still hold to if he can build off of his encouraging 2023 campaign, but there is no guarantee his situation will drastically improve in the near future. Couple this with him turning the dreaded 30 years old next year, then I would highly recommend trying to move off of Sutton before it’s too late.
