Patriots vs. Giants Prediction

The Patriots have two wins this season against the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills. A win Sunday would make New England the king of New York (or New Jersey, or, well, you get the idea).

However, when you head into a game with a more unsettled quarterback situation than the Giants, your franchise is not in a good place.

Even after a bye week to figure it out, we’re still not completely sure who will be under center to start the game for the Patriots on Sunday. It could be regular starter Mac Jones, although he was benched — again — in the Week 11 loss to the Colts.

It could be Bailey Zappe, the backup who has replaced Jones in all three benchings this season yet has no TD passes and one interception to show for all of those appearances.

It could be … Will Grier?

The situation is certainly uncertain in New England. With the Giants, injuries have forced their hand at the quarterback spot. Thus, Tommy DeVito is starting under center. The rookie out of Illinois (and Syracuse) was impressive last week in the win over the Commanders, throwing for 246 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions.

The performance was all the more impressive when you consider he had to pick himself off the turf after being sacked nine times. And despite playing in only four games (two starts), DeVito has been sacked 22 times. That already is tied for 14th among QBs in the league this season.

Fortunately for both teams, they each have quality running backs to hand the ball off to. Despite missing three games, Saquon Barkley is ninth in rushing (651 yards) and last week had a season-high 57 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions.

New England’s Rhamondre Stevenson is coming off a season-high 88 rushing yards against the Colts in Week 11. That followed a then-season-high 87 rush yards against the Commanders in Week 10.

The Giants have a pair of big injury issues on each line. Offensively, OT Evan Neal (ankle) is out for a third straight game, while DT Dexter Lawrence is doubtful to play because of a hamstring injury. WR Darius Slayton (neck) is also doubtful.

The Patriots have a number of players who are questionable, but all were limited participants in practice Friday, including WR DeVante Parker (concussion), OT Trent Brown (ankle), DT Christian Barmore (knee), DL Deatrich Wise Jr. (shoulder), LB Ja’Whaun Bentley (hamstring), and CB Jonathan Jones (knee).

This is a classic “somebody has to win” game. New England is 0-6 vs. the spread against non-divisional opponents, while the Giants, who were 10-2 against the spread last season vs. non-divisional opponents, are only 1-5-1 ATS in this spot this season.

It’s difficult to imagine DeVito picking up a second straight win and suddenly turning into Eli Manning. But the Patriots’ quarterback situation looks even worse than what the Giants are currently dealing with.

Obviously, there is not a lot to like about either team. So, we’ll just take the home team and the points, including the hook.
