Trey Sermon Fantasy Start/Sit: Should the Colts’ RB Be in Fantasy Lineups Against the Ravens?

Indianapolis Colts RB Trey Sermon has been elevated to the active roster for a team lacking at the position. Will he matter moving forward for fantasy?

Trey Sermon’s NFL career has not really gotten started, with the third-year player now on his third different team in three years. With the Indianapolis Colts deciding to add him to their active roster ahead of Week 3, is Sermon a player that fantasy football managers should be considering?

Should I Start or Sit Trey Sermon in Fantasy this Week?

The Colts’ run game has had mixed results through the first two weeks without Jonathan Taylor. As a group, they’re averaging 3.9 yards per rush attempt with four touchdowns. However, three of those touchdowns belong to rookie QB Anthony Richardson, who is missing this week with a concussion.

The other touchdown belongs to Zack Moss, who missed Week 1 with an injury but impressed during his season debut with 107 total yards and a score.

Should you consider Moss to be “the guy” this week in Baltimore, or was Sermon elevated with the intent to take over this backfield in short order now that Deon Jackson is no longer with the team?

Fantasy Outlook for Sermon vs. the Ravens

Moss was the only Colt to get a touch in the Week 2 win over the Texans, and while he was productive, this move indicates that the team would like some active depth at the position.

Sermon, of course, was a third-round pick just two seasons ago and has yet to get much of an opportunity to succeed. In his 11 career appearances, he has just 46 touches, and he’s picked up 212 yards in the process (4.6 yards per touch).

That said, he did spend last season with Shane Steichen in Philadelphia, so there is a level of comfort between him and his new head coach.

As far as Week 3 is concerned, don’t worry about playing Sermon. With Richardson out, the versatility of this offense isn’t the same, and the Ravens have yet to allow a 15-yard run through two weeks.

Is Sermon a Good Add?

Sure! Richardson will be back with time, and we know that mobile quarterbacks have a way of elevating the efficiency of their running backs. As effective as Moss was last weekend, he still hasn’t cleared 115 carries in an NFL season, making a split backfield likely in rather short order.

We’ve yet to get much in the way of reporting regarding Taylor, so we have to operate as if he’s unlikely to join the team at any point. Scoop up Sermon now, free of charge, and see where this situation heads.

Don’t look now, but the Colts’ schedule when most fantasy champions are crowned is anything but scary:

  • Week 16 at ATL
  • Week 17 vs. LV
  • Week 18 vs. HOU
