Matt Corral’s Dynasty Outlook and Value

From a dynasty perspective, few teams have more questions across the board than the Carolina Panthers, and it starts at quarterback.

Who will be the starting QB in 2023 and beyond? Is that player even on the roster anymore? What will head coach Frank Reich do at this position now that he has become the head coach following the turmoil of 2022, which saw Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, and PJ Walker all make five or more starts?

The questions begin with Corral. He was drafted with the 94th overall pick after the Panthers moved up in the draft to select him out of Ole Miss to be the future QB, or at least put his hat in the ring.

However, that never had a chance to play out as the Panthers placed Corral on season-ending IR after he suffered a Lisfranc injury. Corral sustained the injury against the New England Patriots during Carolina’s second preseason game of the year when a player stepped on his foot.

Before the injury, Corral had an up-and-down training camp and preseason. He went just 1 of 9 against Washington but made progress before the injury, completing 9 of 15 attempts for 58 yards.

Yet, he remains an unknown. While he did throw for more than 3,300 yards in each of his two seasons at Ole Miss, there are concerns about how Corral would translate to the NFL game coming from a spread offense.

We never got to answer those questions, and even his offseason training program was somewhat limited due to an ankle injury he sustained in the Sugar Bowl rather than opting out.

From a competitive nature aspect, no one believes in Corral more than Corral, and that shows up as a leader on the field and in his playstyle as a passer and a rusher. From a mentality standpoint, it’s a complete 180-degree turn from the likes of Mayfield and Darnold.

But can the intangibles lead him to a starting job? It’s certainly possible, but it also depends on if the Panthers pursue any QBs in the free agent market. They could also use the No. 9 overall pick on a signal-caller if one of the top four passers slides. They could also choose to move up and walk away with a Will Levis or Anthony Richardson.

Matt Corral’s Fantasy Ranking

Given the number of questions, it’s hard to put a ton of faith in Corral from a long-term value perspective, but I don’t mind having him on a few rosters as an upside dart throw, given this is a fresh start under Reich. If Corral can win the job, the lottery ticket could pay off. But by no means would I be mortgaging the farm to get him.

Corral is currently ranked as the QB35 in PPR formats and is the No. 253 overall in Superflex drafts. At the same time, it is worth noting these rankings do not have rookies added to them, meaning Corral would be vaulted by all four of the main QBs in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Due to this, it’s hard to have much confidence in Corral from a dynasty perspective. He’s yet to take a snap in a game and comes from a non-pro-style scheme where everything was defined, and if the first read wasn’t there, he could take off and use his legs.

Will Reich want to run an unproven QB out there in Week 1? That I am not sure, and until the dust settles, it is hard to have any confidence in what the outcome will be one way or another. If you have Corral on your dynasty team, he’s a hold for now.

There was not a ton of hype coming into his rookie year, and odds are you won’t find a manager willing to give you an equal return in a trade. All we can do is watch and react when something is worth reacting to, whenever that day comes.
