What to expect from the 2022 DB/ST drills

While Stingley Jr. is the highest-rated defensive prospect, the LSU cornerback will not be testing at the 2022 NFL Combine. This opens the door for Cincinnati Bearcat Ahmad Gardner, Auburn Tiger Roger McCreary, and Clemson Tiger Andrew Booth Jr. to boost their value in the CB class.

Pro Football Network’s Lead Draft Analyst Tony Pauline has these CBs ranked first through fourth, respectively, on PFN’s Top 300 Big Board. Stingley grades in with a 4.19, while McCreary and Booth come in as the first few second-round prospects with grades of 3.99 and 3.98. Florida Gator Kaiir Elam rounds out the top 32 overall prospects, but Pauline currently has 11 cornerbacks ranked in his top 100 prospects. NFL scouts will get to survey a deep class on the final day of the 2022 NFL Combine schedule.

But that’s just one group of secondary players. The safeties also hit the field on the final day of action. A former fourth overall prospect still holds the title for highest-ranked safety but lost the DB1 title to Stingley. Notre Dame’s Kyle Hamilton looks like a game-changer at the next level. His coverage skills were among the best in the country during his time with the Fighting Irish. He coupled that with some stellar ball skills as well. Add in that the 6’4″, 220-pound safety lays hits like a linebacker, and scouts will be itching to see Hamilton take the field for 2022 Combine drills.

There’s a much more significant gap between Hamilton and the next-best safety prospect. Penn State’s Jaquan Brisker comes in as 47th overall, highlighting the difference in depth between the safeties and CBs. It seems as though safeties will be a hotter commodity on Day 2 of the 2022 NFL Draft.
