NFL MVP Winners: List of Each Winner by Year and Repeat Winners

Each year the Associated Press votes for an NFL MVP winner. Here's a list of all the NFL MVP winners throughout history.

The NFL MVP Award is voted on by the 50 members of the Associated Press after the final week of the regular season. In today’s NFL, the award is most often won by a quarterback, usually from one of the league’s most successful teams. However, over the years, running backs, a linebacker, and even a kicker have also won the NFL MVP award.

NFL MVP FAQs

Here are some MVP-winning tidbits of info you’ve probably been curious about.

Who Has the Most NFL MVPs?

Peyton Manning won the NFL MVP award five different times throughout his career. He won four with the Indianapolis Colts and his final MVP with the Denver Broncos in 2013.

Has There Ever Been a Tie for the NFL MVP Award?

A tie on the NFL MVP ballot has happened twice in league history. The first instance occurred in 1997, when quarterback Brett Favre and running back Barry Sanders each earned 18 votes, accounting for 37.5% of the total voting share. At the time, MVP voting was conducted before Week 17; after the 1997 season, the league shifted the voting to take place after the regular season.

The second time came in 2003 when two quarterbacks tied with 16 votes each: Peyton Manning and Steve McNair.

How Many Times Has a Player Won Back-To-Back NFL MVP Awards?

Since 1957, only six players have managed to win the NFL MVP Award in consecutive seasons. That exclusive list begins with Jim Brown, who accomplished the feat in 1957 and 1958 during the pre-merger era. He was followed by Joe Montana in 1989 and 1990, and Brett Favre in 1996 and 1997.

Peyton Manning is the only player to do it twice, earning back-to-back MVP honors in both 2003–04 and 2008–09. Most recently, Aaron Rodgers joined the group by winning the award in consecutive seasons in 2020 and 2021. Jim Brown is the only non-quarterback to win back-to-back MVPs.

Has Anyone Ever Won NFL MVP 3 Times in a Row?

Favre is the only player to win the NFL MVP award in three consecutive years. He did it in 1995, 1996, and 1997.
