The Detroit Lions will face off against the Atlanta Falcons in a game that likely won’t feature any playoff teams. Detroit knocked off the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings in two of their last three games, although they still feature one of the worst records in the NFL. Atlanta lost something of a must-win game against the San Francisco 49ers last week, limiting their chances at making the postseason. You’ll find the NFL odds along with my Lions vs. Falcons prediction and pick below.
Detroit Lions vs. Atlanta Falcons pick, prediction | Week 16
- Spread: Falcons -5.5 (Odds provided by DraftKings Sportsbook)
- Moneyline:Â Lions +200, Falcons -250
- Over/Under:Â 42.5
The Lions already feature one of the worst offenses in the NFL, averaging only 17.4 points per game this season. Then, last week, they lost T.J. Hockenson to a season-ending thumb injury.

D’Andre Swift has been out since Thanksgiving. Jamaal Williams and Craig Reynolds have filled in well in his absence, although neither boasts Swift’s game-changing ability. The young running back is expected to return to practice this week, although there’s no guarantee he suits up. Detroit isn’t playing for anything, and they could opt to sit Swift so he doesn’t reaggravate his shoulder injury.
The biggest concern here is Jared Goff. He’s been placed on the COVID list, meaning Tim Boyle is likely to draw the start this week. He hasn’t truly flashed in college or the pros. Boyle threw for 77 yards with 2 interceptions in his only start of the season.
Lions vs. Falcons betting trends
The Lions have been one of the best teams against the spread (ATS) this season. They own a 9-5 ATS record through 14 games. They’re only 4-3 ATS on the road, though.
The Falcons haven’t found as much success, recording a 6-8 ATS record thus far. They’re failing to cover by an average of 5.5 points per game.
They own a league-worst 0-5 home ATS record, failing to cover by an average of 12 points per game in those contests.
Both of these teams lean toward the under in their matchups. Detroit has hit the under in 64.3% of their games, while Atlanta has found it in 57.1% of theirs.
Lions vs. Falcons prediction
Although the Lions have been playing better recently, there’s very little reason to believe they’ll find success with Boyle starting at quarterback. If Swift were able to return this week, it would make this game more interesting, although the outcome isn’t likely to change.

The Falcons haven’t been an overly impressive team in their own right, but this should be their game to lose. Overall, I prefer the under rather than picking a side at the moment.
Lions vs. Falcons Prediction: Falcons 24, Lions 13
