The San Francisco 49ers are dealing with several questions that go beyond the football field. Jed York’s recent legal trouble has brought renewed scrutiny to the franchise’s ownership structure and the people running it.
Now, comments from someone with past ties to the organization have raised another concern for a team hoping to make a deep run in the 2026 season.
Former 49ers Staffer Says York Family Was Already Facing Turmoil
NFL insider Jason La Canfora reported that people around the league have been discussing the situation inside the York family following Jed York’s arrest in Ohio. One former 49ers staffer offered a particularly concerning description of the family’s internal situation.
“It’s pretty ugly inside the family right now,” the staffer said, per La Canfora’s report. “They’re scrambling. There was a lot of weird (stuff) going on even before Jed’s arrest.”
According to La Canfora’s reporting, concerns about internal stability had already been circulating before York’s legal case became public.
York was arrested in East Palestine, Ohio, in August during an undercover prostitution sting. He initially faced charges of engaging in prostitution and possessing criminal tools before reaching a plea agreement.

The prostitution charge was amended to misdemeanor disorderly conduct as part of York’s plea agreement after he pleaded no contest. He was then sentenced to one day in jail for each offense, with the sentences served concurrently. He also received credit for time served and a $1,150 fine.
The legal case has also created potential consequences within the NFL. Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league is reviewing the matter under its Personal Conduct Policy, leaving open the possibility of a suspension or restrictions on York’s league activities.
“It’s being reviewed under the personal conduct policy,” Goodell said in August. “We’ll do that, and when there’s something to be reported we’ll talk.”

Meanwhile, another major change occurred within the 49ers’ front office in August. Paraag Marathe left the organization after 25 years with the team, shifting his focus to 49ers Enterprises and his leadership roles with Leeds United and Rangers FC.
Marathe’s departure does not establish a connection to York’s legal situation, but its timing has given league observers another reason to examine changes within the franchise’s leadership structure.
La Canfora thinks that there is “serious turmoil and unrest.”
The 49ers have already taken steps to reduce the impact of any potential league discipline. York previously transferred day-to-day CEO responsibilities to Al Guido, while general manager John Lynch said organizational leaders have discussed contingency plans in case York receives a lengthy suspension.
Despite the uncertainty, the football operation has continued preparing for the season. Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan have maintained that the team’s daily work remains unaffected.
