While Cruz argues the bill is needed to address the NCAA’s legal chaos, Sen. Chris Murphy has pushed back against the idea that college athletics is in crisis.
College Sports Debate Heats Up as Ted Cruz, Chris Murphy Take Opposing Sides
Cruz previously said that changing federal law is the only realistic way to resolve what he described as the current “legal chaos” in college sports. He believes the Protect College Sports Act would give the NCAA an antitrust exemption, allowing the governing body to establish and enforce rules that have faced legal challenges in recent years.
In Cruz’s latest X post, he pointed to comments from Pat McAfee, who described the current state of college athletics as “absolute chaos.” McAfee argued that there are no consistent rules that schools, coaches, and athletes can reliably follow, suggesting that congressional intervention may now be the only solution.

Cruz also referenced Nick Saban, who has been outspoken about the changes taking place in college sports. Saban questioned the idea of former NFL players being able to return to college athletics, calling the possibility “absolutely crazy.”
“College sports cannot survive as a courtroom free-for-all. It is time to pass the Protect College Sports Act, send it to President (Donald) Trump’s desk, and sign it on College GameDay this fall,” Cruz added.
However, Murphy pushed back against Cruz’s assessment of the situation.
“Sure the eligibility, transfer and compensation rules need to be cleaned up. But college sports doesn’t need a groundbreaking anti-trust exemption for that! The ‘crisis’ is made up. The only crisis is schools and coaches having to work harder to recruit and keep athletes,” Murphy posted on X.

Murphy pointed to the significant financial growth across college athletics, especially in football and basketball, despite these sports being at the center of discussions about the supposed crisis. He cited the SEC’s financial distribution as one example, saying that the conference distributed a record $1 billion to its member schools last year.
The argument also touched on the fact that the changing college sports landscape has not diminished fan interest. Murphy pointed to the 16% increase in ESPN’s college football viewership last year, suggesting that while the changes may have frustrated some coaches, they have not driven fans away.
However, Saban continues to align himself with Cruz’s vision for college sports reform and has been a longtime supporter of the Protect College Sports Act, emerging as one of the legislation’s leading public advocates. In a new commercial supporting the bill, Saban argued that the legislation would bring greater order to the NIL era while protecting student-athletes and college teams.
The debate over the future of college sports is likely to continue to divide lawmakers and elite figures in the sport.
