The Boston College Eagles entered the 2026 college football season with higher expectations even after finishing with just two wins last year.
With a season opener against Cincinnati, the new-look Eagles had an opportunity to prove themselves and kick off their campaign with a win. Instead, they made numerous mistakes and lost 34-15 to the Bearcats in Week 1, prompting fans to call for Bill O’Brien’s job.
Many BC Fans Want Head Coach Bill O’Brien Fired
While a tough, controversial call by the refs went against Boston College right before halftime, preventing the Eagles from cutting the deficit to just three points, they weren’t good enough and didn’t deserve to win. With no improvement, fans want O’Brien out in Chestnut Hill.
“Boston College is going winless. It could happen. Cincinnati is not even expected to be anything special this season and they are still kicking their [expletive]. Leave Bill O’Brien in Cincinnati,” said one fan.
“I cannot wait until they fire this [expletive] Bill O’Brien. What a [expletive] terrible hire,” added another fan.
The Eagles had multiple pre-snap penalties on the offensive side of the ball that hurt them. They put themselves in third-and-long situations and shot themselves in the foot numerous times. O’Brien is in charge of the Eagles’ offense and calling the offensive plays, but he had them unprepared for the season opener. With a full offseason to get his team ready, falling flat is inexcusable, and he’s catching the heat for it.

The Eagles have plenty of buzz surrounding their new era of basketball, and fans are ready for the hoops season instead of caring about football while O’Brien is in charge.
Boston College’s biggest game each year is the Red Bandanna Game, where they honor 9/11 hero Welles Crowther, a BC alum. They play Rutgers on Friday in that game, and one fan thinks O’Brien should be gone if they play poorly in that one.
“Gutless performance from BC. So many careless mistakes and missed opportunities. If Bill O’Brien can’t get them up for next week’s Red Bandanna Game against Rutgers, they should be consider moving on from him ASAP,” said one fan.
Boston College has to be better, and the former NFL coach O’Brien has to be the one to right the ship. Time is ticking, and fans are frustrated. If they can’t improve soon, O’Brien could be headed for the unemployment line, which would make quite a few fans happy.
