From record growth to relentless controversy, Cathy Engelbert’s seven-year tenure as WNBA commissioner has rarely been short on headlines.
Since the second half of 2024, Engelbert has faced mounting criticism over the league’s handling of several major issues, from collective bargaining negotiations to several other debates. Now, Engelbert has made the ultimate decision.
WNBA World Reacts As Commissioner Cathy Engelbert Announces Retirement
On Friday morning, the WNBA announced on social media that its first-ever commissioner will retire from her post at the end of 2026.
“Cathy has presided over the WNBA through the most significant period of growth in the league’s 30-year history. We are grateful for Cathy’s leadership and unwavering commitment to the advancement of women’s basketball,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in the statement.

The news of the announcement spread fast across social media, and the reactions poured in from every corner of the WNBA world.
Earlier this year, while the WNBA and WNBPA were involved in contentious CBA negotiations, critics questioned whether Engelbert was managing the league effectively, and some openly called for her removal.
Engelbert also became a frequent target amid a variety of debates in the WNBA. With Engelbert now set to leave, some of those longtime critics viewed Friday’s announcement as the conclusion of an increasingly controversial chapter.
“BYE CATHY GOOD RIDDANCE,” one user wrote, whereas another one said, “Finally out of my league.”

Interestingly, Engelbert has indicated that her decision was not a sudden reaction to the criticism surrounding her.
Engelbert the Associated Press that she had been thinking about retirement for months. She had initially intended to spend around three-and-a-half years in the position but ultimately stayed for more than seven years.
Journalist Nicole Auerbach was among those reacting positively to the prospect of a fresh direction, with the announcement immediately turning attention toward who could eventually take over the league.
“The WNBA will have soon have new leadership. About time!” Auerbach wrote on X, whereas another WNBA fan commented, “’Retiring.’ Huge win for the WNBA. They deserve so much better.”

While many reactions focused directly on Engelbert’s departure, one influencer chose a more humorous route.
Instead of writing a long statement, they posted a GIF of Caitlin Clark sitting with a smile while clicking pictures with a camera.

Ultimately, Engelbert still has several months left in the role. The WNBA’s 2026 regular season is scheduled to conclude on September 24, with the playoffs beginning on September 27 and the Finals potentially running through October 31.
For now, though, the announcement has already shifted the conversation toward the future.
