‘Lot of People Are Out There Digging’ — Clay Travis Flags Scrutiny on Lane Kiffin After Nick Saban’s College Girls Comment

Clay Travis says Lane Kiffin appears under siege as an old Nick Saban story adds to the scrutiny surrounding LSU's new coach.

Lane Kiffin has spent the week before his LSU debut dealing with enough headlines to fill an entire offseason. An old Alabama story resurfacing just added another one.

Clay Travis believes the volume of scrutiny around Kiffin is becoming its own story. After a Vanity Fair excerpt from John Talty’s new book revisited Kiffin’s time under Nick Saban at Alabama, Travis said it feels as though the LSU coach is “under siege” before he has even coached his first game in Baton Rouge.

Clay Travis Says Lane Kiffin Is ‘Under Siege’

The Alabama story included an account from an unnamed former coach who recalled Saban warning staff about Kiffin’s behavior around college women. The former coach said Saban told him to “keep Lane away from the girls that are in college” and specifically referenced sorority women.

Travis discussed the renewed attention during his Thursday show, while making clear he was not accusing Kiffin of any current wrongdoing.

“I’m not accusing Lane of doing anything inappropriate. I’m just saying they don’t care,” Travis said about LSU’s stance on the head coach.

His larger point was about how much attention has followed Kiffin since he left Ole Miss for LSU. Travis said winning could eventually make some of the noise disappear, but he does not expect the digging to stop yet.

“But I think this feels as if Lane is under siege,” Travis said. “If he wins, then that will start to fade away. But right now, it feels like a lot of people are out there digging.”

Travis also offered a defense of Kiffin’s place in the sport.

“I like Lane,” he said. “I think it makes college football more fun.”

Kiffin’s LSU Debut Arrives with Plenty of Noise

The Alabama story is historical rather than a new allegation. Kiffin served as Saban’s offensive coordinator from 2014 through 2016, and the account appears in Talty’s book through an unnamed former coach rather than a newly disclosed complaint involving Kiffin at LSU.

Still, the timing feeds directly into Travis’ point. Kiffin has also spent the week at the center of LSU’s fight with the Southeastern Conference (SEC) over former NFL players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris.

A Louisiana judge granted a preliminary injunction Thursday, allowing the players to return to college football, while the SEC continues its own legal challenge.

That leaves Kiffin carrying two very different kinds of attention into Saturday’s opener against Clemson: questions about the program he is building and renewed stories about the coach he used to be. ESPN’s College GameDay will also be in Baton Rouge for the matchup, putting an even brighter national spotlight on his debut.

Travis thinks winning is the fastest way to change the conversation. Kiffin gets his first chance Saturday night in Tiger Stadium.
