Rachaad White doesn’t fit the typical skill set that would qualify him for a “high-floor” sort of list, but if you take a step back, his role is crystal clear and only carries upside.
Should You Draft Rachaad White in Fantasy Football?
We’ll start with White’s ADP, which is 108.8 in PFN’s Free Fantasy Mock Draft Simulator. His positional rank checks in at RB40, which is a consensus of me and my colleague Kyle Soppe. We have him projected at 8.71 fantasy points per game, which, if he hits that, would be quite disappointing relative to my outlook on him this year.
I never thought I’d become a White guy. I was in on him as a rookie because I like rookies in general, but we quickly realized that this is a very inefficient runner who struggles between the tackles and struggles in general outside of catching the ball. But he also forced a time share with Leonard Fournette during his rookie season, and he once again forced himself into another role with Bucky Irving last season. I know the injury was a big factor, but White seems to always find a way.
Now that he’s in Washington, I don’t want to say he’s the clear RB2. He’s more like the 1B to Jacory Croskey-Merritt’s 1A. I think what the Commanders want is for Croskey-Merritt to be their lead back and their guy. They showed this to us last year when they wanted him to be the guy. He had that breakout early in the season and then what happened? They made him the lead back and he didn’t do anything with it, to the point where Chris Rodriguez took his starting job late in the season. If not for a random Week 17 illness that gave Croskey-Merritt the starting job back, it would have been Chris Rodriguez, and who knows how we’d be feeling about Croskey-Merritt going into this year.
This offseason, the focus has been on preparing Croskey-Merritt to take on more of a three-down role, and to not be the type of guy where you know the team is running the ball when he’s on the field, because he can’t pass protect or catch the ball. I believe that the goal of the Commanders is for Croskey-Merritt to be their guy. I don’t think he’s talented enough to do it.
When push comes to shove, these coaches and these players need to win games. They’re going to put the best players on the field. White may not be that good, but he is reliable and he’s proven that he can handle volume. He averaged 15.8 fantasy points per game in 2023 on an incredibly inefficient 3.6 yards per carry. Why? Because he caught 64 passes and scored 9 touchdowns.
Ultimately, if Croskey-Merritt struggles again, they will say, “White’s not going to blow the doors off anyone. He’s not going to bust off any 50-yard touchdowns, but he won’t make mistakes. He’ll do what we need him to do. He’ll be trustworthy. He’ll be reliable. He’ll be a guy we can put on the field and know that he won’t mess up.”
I think that is the type of role that can get him into a plus fantasy value situation where he significantly outperforms his ADP. I’ve been ahead of consensus on him all summer. His ADP has moved up a little bit, but it’s pulling back now, and I think we should be able to get a nice discount on him in fantasy drafts. I’m looking to draft White this season for sure.

Rachaad White’s Week 1 Fantasy Outlook

You’d have to be playing in a pretty deep league to have White in the Week 1 flex discussion, but this projects as a valuable data point, even if it doesn’t directly impact your box score.
I’m skeptical about the role upside, but this is as good a spot as any to see what he can do with the Eagles coming off of a season in which they ranked 5th in defensive rush EPA and are favored in this contest.
White is what he is: 3.9 yards per carry for his career and an 89.1% catch rate. I don’t think there’s a real desire to get him a dozen touches, and that’s where I get caught up. If we see more of a rushing split than I expect, I could certainly see White flirting with top-24 status at the position, but I very much need to see that to believe it, given his struggles as a traditional runner.
