The WNBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Month award has ignited intense debate online after Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell secured the August honor over teammate Caitlin Clark.
Despite Mitchell’s explosive scoring stretch, furious fans called the decision a “robbery,” arguing that Clark’s superior playmaking deserved top recognition.
WNBA Fans Enraged After Kelsey Mitchell Wins POTM Over Caitlin Clark
The WNBA officially named the Players of the Month for August, honoring Mitchell in the Eastern Conference and Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson in the Western Conference.
Mitchell earned the nod after lighting up the scoreboard with 28.9 points per game alongside 1.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists. Wilson dominated the West by posting 25.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per contest.

However, the Eastern Conference choice immediately set off a storm of debate across social media, with fans arguing that Mitchell’s own teammate, Clark, was unfairly overlooked.
Taking to X to voice frustration over the award going to Mitchell, one user wrote:
“The @WNBA just robbed Caitlin of PLAYER OF THE MONTH to diminish all the MVP chatter around her! 😡 In what world are 4 extra points worth more than 6 extra assists? This is sick! These ppl are haters! They robbed her of POTW, and now they’ve robbed her of POTM.”

Looking strictly at the numbers, both Fever guards put together incredible runs in August. Mitchell led the scoring charge with 28.9 points per game on highly efficient shooting.
Clark, on the other hand, generated offense across every category, averaging 24.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and a massive 9.4 assists per game. While Mitchell had an edge in pure scoring output, Clark’s playmaking meant she had a hand in creating well over 40 points per game for Indiana’s offense.
Despite the fanbase splitting over who deserved the award, the two guards have formed one of the most dynamic backcourts in basketball. Together, they force opposing defenses into impossible choices, allowing both players to flourish side by side.
The awards debate also highlights an interesting contrast on the international stage.
Despite her scoring displays, Mitchell missed out on the final USA Basketball squad for the FIBA international showcase. Clark, however, secured her spot on the national team roster. She is set to make her highly anticipated World Cup debut on September 4 when Team USA takes on China.
