Kawhi Leonard and the LA Clippers find themselves at the center of the NBA’s biggest salary cap circumvention scandal in history. After journalist Pablo Torre revealed on his podcast that the Clippers offered unrecorded off-court income and endorsement opportunities to the seven-time All-Star, the league launched an independent investigation.
After an eleven-month wait, the final ruling found the Clippers guilty, and the league spared no expense in handing down historic punishments.

The initial “no-show” endorsement deal with the eco-friendly financial firm Aspiration was worth $28 million, but Torre later updated his report, revealing that an additional secret $20 million stock side deal had been offered, bringing Leonard’s total earnings between $40 million and $50 million, or more.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Clippers received a $30 million fine, were stripped of five first-round draft picks, and were placed under a five-year league-supervised monitoring program. Owner Steve Ballmer faces a one-year suspension from all team and league activities.
President of Business Operations, Gillian Zucker, also faces a one-year suspension without pay, while Lawrence Frank, President of Basketball Operations, gets a six-month suspension without pay. Kawhi Leonard received a $700K penalty, and his uncle, Dennis Robertson, is subject to a 5-year ban from engaging in or conducting business with NBA teams.
Reacting to the news, The Ringer’s Bill Simmons took to social media to troll the Clippers.

The Clippers’ lack of an NBA title is no secret, and in hopes of securing their first-ever NBA championship, they are now paying a high price and will feel the lingering sting of this penalty for years to come.
Leonard avoided suspension, and with the investigation wrapped up, Shams Charania reported that there is a full expectation that his long-awaited trade to the Toronto Raptors will finally go through in the coming days.

In exchange, the Raptors are sending a package to Los Angeles featuring Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks (2031 and 2033), a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks.
