The Kawhi Leonard-Los Angeles Clippers salary cap circumvention ordeal is finally nearing a close. Last September, investigative journalist Pablo Torre accused LA of funneling $28 million under the table to Leonard and his camp through Aspiration.
Nearly a year later, after intensive internal investigations, the NBA dropped the hammer on the Clippers, stripping them of five first-round picks. They also suspended team owner Steve Ballmer and executives Gillian Zucker and Lawrence Frank while issuing the franchise a $30 million fine, the largest team fine in league history.
The Clippers don’t believe the process through which they’ve been investigated and subsequently punished was fair. They have sent a letter to the league outlining what they felt was an “injustice,” garnering fierce pushback from the NBA world.

In a letter addressed to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and signed by former United States attorney for the Southern District of New York David N. Kelley, the Clippers called out the NBA’s investigation.
“In the last year, Steve Ballmer has spent nearly $50 million funding an investigation by Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz that has stretched far beyond the bounds of what the league set out to investigate, let alone the bounds of ‘fundamental fairness.'”
The letter then went into how taxing and “distracting” the investigation has been for Clippers employees who have spent thousands of hours on it. It also hit on Ballmer’s reputation taking a dive as well throughout the process.
The letter read, “League counsel has acknowledged in our discussions that the league does not believe there was an agreement between the Clippers and Aspiration to funnel money to Kawhi Leonard.”
The Clippers insist that there are no rules outlawing introductions between sponsors/companies and a team’s players. They revealed that high-ranking NBA officials also knew about Leonard being introduced to these companies.
LA has maintained that it will challenge these rulings and the punishments that have come its way.

The letter concludes with the Clippers calling the investigation “flawed from the outset.” The NBA world was not pleased with the franchise’s statement and seeming lack of ownership over the scandal.
Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix said, “The Clippers continuing to call Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting ‘podcast allegations’ as a way to diminish its veracity is beyond embarrassing. But real reporting is believing the [expletive] they were peddling?”

“Blaming a podcaster is comical. No accountability by the organization,” one NBA fan said, calling out the letter for relegating Torre’s findings to “podcast allegations.”
Another fan pointed out that Leonard’s statement following the league’s punishment was essentially an admission of guilt. They said, “Kawhi’s admission of guilt cuts their ‘witch hunt’ argument off at the knees. He said, ‘I accept full responsibility for lapses in judgment by people within my inner circle and regret the distraction this situation has caused the fans and my family.'”

Unfortunately for the Clippers, this isn’t the end of this debacle.
Torre took to his podcast after the crackdown and said, “There is more to come than is in this NBA report. This is not everything.”
He won a Pulitzer Prize for his investigative journalism in regard to the Clippers’ salary cap circumvention. So, if his future findings on this case are of similar quality, it’s safe to say that Ballmer and company will have more on their hands to deal with.
