The NBA handed massive penalties to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday after completing a nearly year-long investigation into alleged salary cap circumvention involving Kawhi Leonard. The franchise lost five first-round picks, received a $30 million fine, and owner Steve Ballmer and executives Lawrence Frank and Gillian Zucker were suspended.
The Clippers quickly responded by vowing to contest the ruling, setting off a wave of reactions across the sports world.

The NBA hired the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz almost a year ago to investigate whether the Clippers skirted the salary cap in connection with Leonard. Investigative reporter Pablo Torre accused Leonard of taking side deals involving team-associated companies, including Aspiration and Daktronics, on his show “Pablo Torre Finds Out.”
The investigation finally reached its conclusion on Wednesday, when the NBA announced its findings and imposed significant penalties on the Clippers.
Leonard responded shortly after the news broke, accepting “full responsibility for lapses of judgment by people within my inner circle.”
Minutes later, the Clippers pushed back against the NBA’s findings, vowing to “vigorously challenge these findings and penalties” and accusing the NBA’s investigation of being “heavily biased” and “seeking to justify a predetermined narrative.” The Clippers also stated that “what the league told us privately differs from what it announced today.”

The Clippers’ statement immediately generated some strong reactions from fans.

Others focused on what the punishment could mean for Ballmer and the wider NBA landscape.
“Ballmer finna snitch on other teams,” another fan reacted.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was also pulled into the conversation as fans continued weighing in on the league’s decision.

The Clippers’ statement specifically said the organization intended to go “through every avenue available to us and look forward to an ethical and impartial arbitration process.”
However, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported that the NBA’s ruling is “final,” and that the Clippers have “no formal appeal or arbitration process” to pursue. Challenging the punishment in court is now the Clippers’ only remaining avenue to contest the league, but it’s unclear if Ballmer and Co. will go down that route.
The fact that Leonard had already stepped forward to accept the mistakes from his camp didn’t help the optics for the Clippers as they vowed to fight the NBA’s penalties.
Leonard will now be traded to the Toronto Raptors, and he stated that he’s looking forward to a fresh start with the organization that he led to an NBA championship in 2019.
“As I return to Toronto, I am focused on what I can control, closing this chapter, and moving forward with a clean slate,” Leonard wrote in his statement.
