The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are keeping a close eye on wide receiver Emeka Egbuka as they prepare for the start of the 2026 season.
Egbuka is dealing with a toe injury and is currently considered day-to-day. He missed Tuesday’s practice, adding some uncertainty to his status ahead of Tampa Bay’s Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
What Happened to Emeka Egbuka?
Egbuka reportedly suffered a toe sprain during a joint practice with the New York Jets in mid-August. The injury has limited his participation as the Buccaneers begin preparing for the regular season, with Egbuka sitting out team drills while he works his way back.
His availability for Week 1 remains uncertain, although head coach Todd Bowles offered an encouraging update. Bowles said he is “hopeful” that Egbuka will be ready for Tampa Bay’s season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 13, 2026.

However, Egbuka’s official status will likely become clearer once he is able to return to full practice.
Buccaneers Turn Their Attention to Week 1
The Egbuka injury comes as Tampa Bay turns its full attention toward the regular season after finalizing its initial 53-man roster.
The Buccaneers have built their roster with a clear emphasis on size and depth along the line of scrimmage. Tampa Bay is carrying seven defensive linemen and a five-man edge rotation, giving the team plenty of options up front.

That group includes the Buccaneers’ highly anticipated 15th overall pick, Rueben Bain Jr., along with veterans A’Shawn Robinson and Rakeem Nuñez-Roches.
To make room for additional depth in the trenches, Tampa Bay is entering the season relatively light in the secondary, carrying only eight cornerbacks and safeties on the active roster.
The Buccaneers also filled 16 of their 17 practice squad spots, adding experienced players such as quarterback Easton Stick and safety Ifeatu Melifonwu for additional depth.
Other Buccaneers Injury Updates Ahead of Week 1
Egbuka isn’t the only Tampa Bay player being monitored ahead of the season opener.
Edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. is expected to play after returning to practice following an injury scare during joint practices. He is expected to have a significant role early in the season.

Wide receiver Jalen McMillan is also considered day-to-day with a knee injury. He missed multiple weeks of work, but Bowles has expressed optimism about his availability.
Linebacker Christian Rozeboom remains uncertain as he works his way back from a foot injury. He has been doing some light running, but his status could come down to a game-time decision.
Meanwhile, cornerback Josh Hayes has been placed on injured reserve after undergoing a knee procedure and will miss the start of the regular season.
Will Emeka Egbuka Play in Week 1?
Egbuka remains day-to-day. His return to full practice will be the clearest sign of whether he’ll make his NFL debut in Week 1.
