‘I Don’t Want To Be The Conspiracy Person’ — Vikings Insider Smells Something Fishy as J.J. McCarthy’s Injury Incites Speculation

J.J. McCarthy’s ankle injury raises new questions about his role with the Vikings and whether he could be headed toward QB3.

The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback situation has taken an unusual turn with the regular season approaching. J.J. McCarthy’s recent ankle injury has led to questions about his role, while the timing has left some observers wondering about the team’s plans.

The injury may be legitimate, but the circumstances surrounding it have created room for speculation. That has put McCarthy’s place on the depth chart under closer scrutiny.

Matthew Coller Questions J.J. McCarthy’s Injury and Vikings’ QB3 Situation

McCarthy suffered an ankle sprain during Minnesota’s second preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.

The injury was initially described as minor, but NFL insider Adam Schefter later reported that McCarthy would miss multiple weeks. McCarthy also decided not to play in the preseason finale against the Denver Broncos because he did not feel comfortable participating.

The timing became more curious because Minnesota had already established its quarterback order.

Kyler Murray was named the starter, while veteran Carson Wentz is expected to secure the primary backup role, which leaves McCarthy facing questions about his position on the depth chart heading into the regular season.

Matthew Coller addressed the situation on Purple Insider and questioned whether the injury could also allow the Vikings to avoid publicly naming McCarthy their third quarterback.

Coller said, “I don’t want to be the conspiracy person. It seems like they just don’t want to name him the QB3, so it would be more convenient to say that he’s hurt.”

His comments came amid conflicting reports about how the Vikings and McCarthy handled the preseason finale.

Reports indicated that Minnesota wanted McCarthy to play the first half, while McCarthy ultimately decided to sit because he was not comfortable enough to participate.

Vikings influencer The Purple Persuasion didn’t mince words: “Fully believe this is another fake injury. Classic JJ McCarthy at this point, can’t face QB3 reality.”

This disconnect has generated questions about the former top-10 pick’s future in Minnesota. Trade speculation surfaced around roster cutdown day, although the Vikings ultimately kept McCarthy on their initial 53-man roster instead of placing him on injured reserve.

This decision is significant because placing McCarthy on IR before the season would have kept him out for the year. Keeping him on the roster gives Minnesota time to let him recover while preserving its options once he returns. Last season, McCarthy ranked 34th among eligible quarterbacks in PFN’s QB Impact Score.

There is also a financial reason for the Vikings to avoid a rushed move. McCarthy’s four-year, $21.85 million rookie contract is fully guaranteed and includes a $12.71 million signing bonus.

A trade would accelerate the remaining bonus money onto Minnesota’s salary cap, while his limited NFL experience and injury history could make a significant return difficult to secure.

So, for the time being, McCarthy remains part of Minnesota’s quarterback picture. However, his injury has added another question to a position already surrounded by uncertainty.
