The WNBA enters the final month of its regular season tomorrow. Players want to finish the campaign strong to improve their chances for end-of-season awards.
However, fans and teams alike cannot watch the action unfold until the calendar turns to Sept. 17, and they are not happy.
WNBA World Bashes League for Scheduling During FIBA World Cup Break
Even though the WNBA enters the final month of its regular season, teams have little time to fine-tune their games and build momentum before the postseason arrives. Instead, all eyes will be on the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin, Germany. The event takes place from Sept. 4 to Sept. 13.
No WNBA franchise will play a single game during the international tournament. The league returns to action on Sept. 17, but it only has one more week of regular-season play before the postseason.
Fans recognize the break is necessary, but many argue that WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert did not factor in the World Cup when approving the 2026 schedule.
Engelbert has not been popular in many WNBA circles, and this two-week break leading up to the final postseason push certainly does not help her case. Fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express their thoughts.
One sports fan believes the league needs a new commissioner.
“WNBA not having a game from now until September 17th is ludicrous. League is so unorganized … when they’re deep in the playoffs, it’ll be: start of NBA season, middle of NFL & College football, [and] end of MLB playoffs. WNBA has to get a new commissioner,” the account posted.

Others on social media agreed, arguing the inconsistent schedule at the beginning of the season caused this conflict.
“The whole WNBA schedule this year is absolutely ridiculous. Teams were playing 3 games in 4 days … That goes against the league’s own stated principles, and then there were weeks when some teams would play only ONE GAME in a 7-day period. MADNESS,” the user added.
Another WNBA fan cannot think of a worse time for the league to “disappear.”

A’ja Wilson, Olivia Miles, Kelsey Mitchell, and Caitlin Clark headline a tight MVP race coming down to the wire. Clark and Mitchell’s Indiana Fever even take on Miles’ Minnesota Lynx twice to close out the regular season. However, both teams and their respective stars may not be at their best after coming back from the break.
Another user believes this scheduling snafu only adds to the league’s long list of controversies.
