ESPN Legend Blasts WNBA Analyst’s ‘Ridiculous’ Suggestion That Caitlin Clark Should Come Off the Bench For Fever

Former ESPN veteran Linda Cohn weighs in after a controversial take on Caitlin Clark’s role with the Indiana Fever resurfaces.

Caitlin Clark is once again at the center of a heated WNBA discussion. The Indiana Fever star is currently averaging 22.5 points per game and has played a major role in helping her team secure a spot in the playoffs.

However, despite her impressive season, an old take suggesting that Clark should come off the bench has resurfaced online, and a former ESPN sportscaster was not impressed.

Linda Cohn’s Not Happy With a WNBA Analyst’s Take Regarding Caitlin Clark

Sports blog BrickCenter recently resurfaced an old clip from a June episode of “No Offseason: The Athletic Women’s Basketball Show.”

In that episode, analyst Zena Keita appeared to suggest that Clark should be sitting on the bench in favor of Raven Johnson.

“Curious if I think… I don’t know if it’s gonna be Caitlin doing it for Caitlin. I think an external event has to happen. Raven Johnson starts. Right?…”

“I’m just giving you an example of, like, a canon-type event that would need to occur for Caitlin to, like, be like, ‘Oh, I am not the birthday,’ as the kids would say these days. ‘I am not the main event. I am a member of a team.’ And it’s just I think it’s a really great take. It’s more so now: how does that come about? How does Caitlin not become bigger than the program? And I think that’s the question,” Keita said during a June broadcast of the show.

The comment didn’t get much traction when it originally aired. But once the clip made the rounds again, it caught fire online.

Former ESPN personality Linda Cohn saw the resurfaced post and reposted it on her X account. In her response, she essentially said that taking this far off base tracks perfectly with someone who has built a habit of making questionable calls about the sport.

“Makes perfect sense to those who make ridiculous observations,” Cohn wrote on X.

The timing of Cohn’s reaction is also notable. Keita has already faced plenty of criticism from sections of the WNBA community following another discussion involving Clark.

Just recently, she credited Lynx rookie Olivia Miles with setting the league’s all-time single-season rookie assist record without mentioning that Clark already owns that mark by a wide margin.

“Olivia Miles has also made her mark this season, setting the all-time WNBA rookie assist record. And she’s been doing it with a flash. It’s kind of crazy to look at some of the numbers that she’s putting up in a single season,” Keita said during a recent segment of the show.

Miles entered Sunday’s action with 228 assists on the year. It is an excellent number for a first-year point guard. But Clark’s rookie season, two years ago, is still the standard nobody’s come close to.

She finished that year with 337 assists in just 40 games, a total that also broke the WNBA’s overall single-season assist record (it was later broken by Alyssa Thomas in 2025), not just the rookie one.

Now, getting called out by both the fanbase and a respected voice like Cohn in the same week isn’t a great look for Keita’s credibility.
