Makai Lemon finally got his first NFL game action Friday night. The Philadelphia Eagles probably hoped the rookie’s debut would answer some questions after a hamstring injury wiped out much of his summer. Instead, it created a few more.
Lemon finished Philadelphia’s 30-13 preseason loss to the Cincinnati Bengals with three catches for three yards on five targets. One pass went through his hands and became an interception, while he also muffed a punt before recovering it. Former Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho came away believing Lemon can recover, but he sees a larger issue attached to the rookie’s draft status.
Emmanuel Acho Says ‘Fine’ Is Not Enough for Makai Lemon
“Rewatching Makai Lemon’s first game, he will be fine,” Acho wrote in an X post. “He has good tools, and he needs to get his feet under him.”
That was the encouraging part. Acho’s concern came immediately afterward.
“The problem, however, is ‘fine’ isn’t good enough when you’re drafted in the 1st round to a Super Bowl caliber team,” he wrote.
Philadelphia selected Lemon No. 20 overall in April after his breakout final season at USC. The 2025 Biletnikoff Award winner finished the regular season with 1,156 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns while earning first-team All-America honors.

According to PFN’s CFB WR Impact Metric, Lemon ranked as the fourth-best wideout in the nation last season with an impact score of 85.1.
“The expectations are so high because of his draft position, not necessarily his talent level,” Acho added. “Fans wouldn’t be as vocally concerned if he was a third round pick, but trade AJ (Brown) and draft Makai at pick 20, he’s expected to deliver. My fear, Makai will be a prisoner of his draft position his entire Eagles tenure, but the tape should tell you someone’s talent, not their draft number.”
Acho is right. Many Eagles fans believe that Lemon was drafted to replace Brown, but he has a completely different skill set from the latter, and the USC product is unlikely to become that dominant wideout in the NFL.
That résumé raised the bar before Lemon ever put on an Eagles uniform. His first professional game did little to lower expectations.

However, context matters. Lemon missed portions of spring work and a significant chunk of training camp because of a hamstring injury, then sat out Philadelphia’s first two preseason games. Friday was his first chance to experience NFL game speed.
The Eagles themselves acknowledged the rough moments. Lemon told the team’s official website afterward that he was glad the mistakes happened in August so he could correct them before September.

Philadelphia also appeared determined to get him involved. Tanner McKee targeted Lemon twice on the opening drive, and the rookie saw five looks despite playing only the first half. That volume made the lack of production stand out even more.
Acho’s assessment, therefore, was not that Lemon already looks like a failed pick. It was almost the opposite. He believes the tools are present and expects the rookie to settle down.
The pressure comes from where Lemon landed and who he is expected to replace. Philadelphia is entering the season with championship expectations, and first-round receivers are rarely afforded long developmental runways on rosters built to win immediately.
Lemon’s preseason debut can be written off as one bad night after an interrupted summer. Acho’s warning is that “fine” eventually has to become something more.
