College football is facing an unusual eligibility dispute that has pushed the sport into new territory. Dae’Quan Wright went from competing for an NFL roster to pursuing another college season after a court ruling changed the rules for certain players.
Lane Kiffin’s defense of the move has now drawn sharp reactions from fans who question what this means for the future of college football.

Kiffin, the LSU Tigers’ head coach, defended programs pursuing players who received another year of eligibility through a Louisiana court ruling. He argued that schools cannot simply ignore those players when competing programs are willing to recruit them.
“At the end of the day, because of these rulings, they’re either going to play for you or they’re going to play for someone else around the country,” Kiffin said Monday. “So we’ve made the decision to recruit them like probably most people are.”
Wright became one of the most prominent examples of the unusual situation. The former Ole Miss tight end spent part of the summer with the Cleveland Browns after previously signing with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent. Cleveland waived him, and Wright cleared waivers on Aug. 25, opening the door for his return to college football.

Wright had 39 catches for 635 yards and five touchdowns at Ole Miss in 2025. The Louisiana court ruling granted members of the 2022 recruiting class another year of eligibility, allowing players who had moved into the professional ranks to seek another college season.
Wright’s eligibility doesn’t come from the nationwide case a federal appeals court recently paused; it stems from a separate Louisiana state-court lawsuit, in which Wright is one of 16 football players (out of more than 30 total plaintiffs) who won a temporary restraining order specifically addressing players who had signed professional contracts.
This development, and LSU’s approach, has divided college football fans, particularly those who believe signing an NFL contract should close the door on a return to the NCAA.

The criticism also reached the larger question of whether college sports are becoming too similar to professional leagues.

Kiffin has maintained that the players should not be blamed for the eligibility ruling. His position, however, has done little to quiet the criticism surrounding the schools’ willingness to take advantage of the ruling.
“Douche. College sports are ruined. Not because of Kiffin but he plays a role in it,” another fan wrote.

Another took aim at Kiffin’s history, writing, “I mean he’s always been pure garbage why would anyone expect him to change.”
According to the latest development, the SEC has “not permitted” any institution under it to have an athlete like Wright, per its emergency ban. Attorneys representing the Louisiana plaintiffs, including Wright, have signaled they may pursue a contempt motion against the NCAA, arguing that the SEC’s new ban defies the court order that granted the players’ eligibility.
