Just two years after drafting J.J. McCarthy 10th overall in 2024, the Minnesota Vikings are facing an unexpected decision about his future.
McCarthy was once viewed as the team’s long-term answer at quarterback under Kevin O’Connell, but he has now fallen behind veteran Kyler Murray and is reportedly competing with Carson Wentz for the backup role. His place on the 53-man roster is also reportedly in question.

McCarthy’s time in Minnesota got off to a difficult start. A torn meniscus wiped out his entire rookie season, and his first year as a starter in 2025 was disrupted by an ankle sprain, concussion, and hand fracture. His inconsistent play over 10 starts only added to concerns about his development.
His recent standing has also reflected those struggles, with McCarthy ranking fifth-worst in the league last season on PFN’s QB Impact Metric.
Those struggles reportedly affected his relationship with the organization. One team told NFL insider Jason La Canfora about the situation bluntly, saying, “It just wasn’t a good fit. It was pretty bad behind the scenes.”

La Canfora also pointed to problems with McCarthy’s playing style and development.
“McCarthy quickly fell out of favor in Minnesota, playing at a warp-speed, often out-of-control tempo while failing to improve his decision-making or develop touch on his throws,” La Canfora wrote. “He didn’t handle his staccato development well, could be moody according to team sources, and failed to build on-field chemistry with the club’s highly paid playmakers.”
Those concerns have now left the Vikings with a difficult decision as they prepare to finalize their 53-man roster.

Vikings Face Difficult McCarthy Decision
Moving on from a first-round quarterback after only two seasons would be a significant move, but Minnesota also has to consider the financial consequences.
McCarthy has two years remaining in his four-year, $21.85 million fully guaranteed contract. And his deal also included a $12.71 million signing bonus.

A trade would likely be the cleanest way for the Vikings to move forward. The acquiring team would take on his remaining guaranteed salary, while Minnesota would be responsible for roughly $6.3 million in remaining signing bonus money as dead cap. The Vikings could also receive a draft pick in return.
Cutting McCarthy would be far more expensive because of the guaranteed money remaining on his contract. Minnesota would have to absorb much of that salary as dead money, making a release unlikely unless the relationship has completely broken down.
The Vikings could also keep McCarthy as their third quarterback behind Murray and Wentz. That would avoid an immediate major cap hit, but it could leave the team with an unsettled quarterback situation.
With the 53-man roster cutdown approaching, general manager Nolan Teasley and head coach Kevin O’Connell must decide whether McCarthy is still worth developing or whether it is time to move on from a quarterback who was once expected to lead the franchise.
