The Atlanta Falcons made a litany of changes this offseason. Moving on from Raheem Morris, they signed Kevin Stefanski to be the new head coach, while also bringing in Tua Tagovailoa as a veteran quarterback presence.
Unfortunately, the early returns have been disastrous for the former Pro Bowler. As a result, there is a ton of panic about where the franchise stands.
For a former Super Bowl champion, LeSean McCoy, the tape is even worse than most people can anticipate.
Tua Tagovailoa Isn’t a Starting Caliber Quarterback Anymore
At the height of his powers, Tagovailoa was powering an electric Miami Dolphins offense.
However, injuries derailed his career, and he hasn’t been the same player since, going from top-5 on PFN’s Quarterback Impact Metric in 2022 to number 28 in 2025.
Rather than a problem of the system, the early portions of the offseason have reinforced that Tagovailoa isn’t the same level of quarterback anymore.
McCoy is among those who have completely given up on the Hawaiian-born star.

“You can’t see how bad Tua is? The truth about Tua is this: I think he’s so comfortable in his life that football’s secondary to him. It all started with that interview about Josh Allen,” the Philadelphia Eagles legend revealed on the latest episode of the “Speakeasy” podcast.
“This dude don’t care about playing football no more,” McCoy continued. “He’s having a good time. ‘I got my family, I got my money, my head’s right. I’m happy to even be out here.’ I watch certain players. There’s certain players, especially quarterbacks, they take their job so seriously.”
Unfortunately, Tagovailoa doesn’t fall in that category for McCoy.

“When I watch him, I don’t see it. He doesn’t remind me of a quarterback,” McCoy added. “He reminds me of a paid corner. Got my bread, I’m a nickel. I’m under no pressure. I’m gonna play a couple of series a game.”
As a result, the six-time Pro Bowler isn’t sure that he is the right choice to be QB1.
“He doesn’t come across to me as a starting quarterback in the NFL anymore. Maybe he’s in a situation in his life where ‘I’m good, I’m comfortable.’”
It remains to be seen how the season pans out for the Falcons. With the injury to Michael Penix Jr., the focus has been on Tagovailoa to start the season for them. But with the way things are going, it might not be a viable option for the team for too long.
