Luther Burden III flashed genuine star potential in limited work as a rookie and has been the talk of the Chicago offseason. He also could not get on the field for most of last season, which is a strange thing to reconcile. The path to a sophomore breakout is real, and so are the reasons it might not happen. Fantasy managers face a pure value question in 2026.
Should I Draft Luther Burden III in Fantasy Football?
This is a very tough player for me to evaluate, so let me lay out both sides honestly.
Let’s start with the positives, because they are legitimate. Burden’s 2.79 yards per route run sits squarely in elite territory. That is the kind of efficiency that typically signals a special player rather than a rotational piece. In Week 17, operating as the clear WR1, he dropped 27.8 fantasy points on an 8-138-1 line and looked every bit like a star in the making.
The offseason noise has been just as loud. Ben Johnson could not have been more effusive in his praise this summer, and the drumbeat has been relentless. Johnson flat-out said, “I’m buying Luther Burden stock.” When a coach of that caliber talks up a young receiver to that degree, it cannot be dismissed. There is a real case building for a massive sophomore leap.

Now the negatives, and they are just as substantial. Burden ran only 234 routes last season. He could not get on the field ahead of Olamide Zaccheaus for most of the year, and he finished with a measly 12.8% target share. Even after the Week 17 explosion, he failed to exceed 65% of the snaps in any of his final three games and caught no more than three passes in any of them.
So he supposedly broke out, and then the team put the genie right back in the bottle? It is entirely fair to ask why.
Do not let my ranking fool you into thinking I am all-in here. I am neither in nor out on Burden. This is a pure value proposition. I see the upside and I am generally someone who chases upside. At the 4/5 turn, if the players I prefer are already gone, I am fine taking the shot.
My problem is how much projection it requires. DJ Moore is gone, sure. But Burden played plenty of games without Rome Odunze last season and still could not break through. I am not convinced the targets Moore vacates move the needle as much as people assume.

It comes down to one question: is Burden capable of earning targets at a level he never displayed as a rookie? The frustrating reality of modern fantasy football is that you have to pay for that answer in advance, and that is not something I love doing.
Burden is my WR21 against a WR25 ADP. That gap reflects an ugly stretch of the draft board where he carries more upside than most of the names around him. I will make the pick if I have to. I will also be holding my breath in September, hoping it works out.
