Courtland Sutton posted a clean-looking stat line last season that will tempt plenty of fantasy managers. What sits underneath it is far shakier than the counting numbers suggest. Denver’s receiver room also looks very different from a year ago. Fantasy managers should think carefully before paying this price.
Should I Draft Courtland Sutton in Fantasy Football?
The surface stats are going to fool people. Sutton went for 74 catches, 1,017 yards, and seven touchdowns at 12.9 fantasy points per game. That reads like a perfectly fine WR2 season, and in a vacuum, it is.
Look at how he got there and the picture changes fast. Sutton ran the fourth-most routes in the entire NFL last season. The volume was enormous. Yet he was targeted on just 21.1% of those routes, which ranked 41st. That is a receiver being carried by sheer snap count rather than by earning the football, and snap count is the least stable input in a fantasy profile.

The efficiency confirms it. Sutton posted a 1.73 yards per route run that ranked 35th and a 0.088 first downs per route run that also landed 35th. Neither figure is close to acceptable for a player being drafted inside the top 33 at the position. When a receiver ranks in the mid-30s in every rate metric while running more routes than almost anyone, the production is coming from opportunity alone.
Here is the crucial context. Every bit of that output came while Sutton was the unquestioned WR1 in Denver. That is no longer his job. Jaylen Waddle is in town, and he is clearly the best receiver on this roster. Sean Payton surrendered three 2026 picks to acquire him, which is not the sort of investment a coach makes for a complementary piece.
That trade fundamentally reorders the target hierarchy. Sutton has spent his career as the guy defenses had to account for in Denver. He now becomes the second option opposite a player with a 100-catch season on his résumé, and his target rate was already 41st when he had first claim on everything. Dropping down a rung when you were not efficiently converting the top rung is a genuinely bad combination.
Age compounds the problem. Sutton is about to turn 31 and has become a pure outside receiver at this stage of his career. That is a narrow role with a hard ceiling. Outside receivers who cannot separate at a high rate tend to lose snaps quickly once a team has better options, and Denver now has one.

Let me be fair about the range of outcomes. Sutton will find the end zone a handful of times and he will probably finish north of my WR45 ranking. I will grant that much. The issue is what happens at the top end. His realistic ceiling is roughly his WR33 ADP, which means the best-case scenario is that you break even on the pick.
That is the entire argument against him. Sutton is a small-hit, big-miss receiver, and those are exactly the players to avoid. It is doubly true when they are priced like this one.
