‘It Can’t Snowball Anymore’ — Sports Host Urges Cathy Engelbert to ‘Put Her Foot Down’ on Trans Controversy to Stop WNBA From Being a ‘Laughingstock’

Rachel DeMita urged WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert to address the transgender eligibility debate and protect players from outside noise.

Sports host Rachel DeMita called on WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert to take immediate control of the league’s growing debate over transgender eligibility following recent courtside disruptions.

DeMita argued that outside commentators are using the controversy to turn the sport into a ‘laughingstock’ and urged leadership to step in and protect the players.

Rachel DeMita Urges WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert To End Transgender Eligibility Controversy

The WNBA has found itself at the center of a massive media circus, fueled by courtside confrontations and off-court debates.

The tension reached a boiling point during a matchup between the Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever, when former NBA center Enes Kanter sat baseline wearing a shirt touching on the transgender athlete debate following his viral declaration for the 2027 WNBA Draft.

After a heated on-court confrontation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud, security stepped in and escorted Kanter out of Wintrust Arena. Cloud’s postgame actions only added more fuel to the story, turning a single basketball game into a week-long national debate.

For sports host DeMita, the constant side-show has officially crossed a line.

Speaking on her Courtside Club podcast, she pointed out that the outrage isn’t even coming from actual women’s basketball fans. Instead, outside commentators and viral personalities are simply hijacking the league for easy content.

“The people who are talking about this and making it a big story, clearly they’re bored right now and they have nothing else to talk about… So, they’re picking the WNBA. It’s not WNBA fans who care about this… It is people outside the WNBA who care about this. And they are using this as their new story of the week,” DeMita said.

DeMita made it clear that the responsibility to stop the circus falls squarely on WNBA Commissioner Engelbert, urging her to stop avoiding the issue, step up as a leader, and protect both the league’s reputation and its players from outside harassment.

“Cathy needs to say something, needs to put her foot down, or needs to stop whatever this is. It can’t snowball anymore,” DeMita emphasized.

“Cathy needs to protect her players… Needs to protect her league… These players are now making millions of dollars, they shouldn’t be able to still be the laughingstock of sports. You got to figure it out,” she added.

DeMita urged the front office to tighten venue security, coordinate directly with team organizations, and take the heat as leadership should.

With the WNBA enjoying unprecedented popularity, drawing a firm line is the only way to stop outside noise from overshadowing the real basketball on the floor.
