In news that shocked the entire NFL world, Nick Chubb officially announced his retirement on social media on Friday, August 21. A spectacular career for the heralded running back came to a stunning end at just 30 years of age.
But it didn’t take long for messages to start pouring in for one of the best running backs to grace the Cleveland Browns franchise. As the NFL community celebrated his accomplishments, social media turned into a love fest.
Nick Chubb Calls It a Career
With preseason action underway, fans had a trifecta of games to look forward to on Friday night. But the proceedings were overshadowed when Chubb took to social media to announce his retirement.
“Football was a huge blessing in my life,” Chubb wrote on Instagram. “It opened so many doors, gave me opportunities I never could have imagined, and allowed me to meet some amazing people. I’m grateful for everyone I crossed paths with along the way, and I promise I took something from each of you. Thank you to my teammates, my coaches, the fans, my family, my friends, and anyone who ever cheered me on.”
A beautiful message, he pulled at the heartstrings of football fans all over as he concluded, “Twelve-year-old me could have never imagined where this game would take us. But 30-year-old me can look back and say we gave it everything we had.”

Spending seven years with the Browns, he put together an impeccable resume for them, compiling 6,843 rushing yards (third-highest in franchise history) and was named to four consecutive Pro Bowls from 2019 onwards.
As a result, his final salute went out to the team where he’d spent the majority of his career. “Till the day that I die, it will always be: GO DAWGS. GO BROWNS!!! Batman out.”

The NFL fan base was clearly stunned by the move, but soon the love started pouring in. JP Acosta of CBS Sports gave credit where it was due, writing, “Special player in his prime.”
He wasn’t the only one to acknowledge Chubb’s greatness, as NFL insider Jordan Schultz also celebrated his career, while pointing out the impact Chubb had had off the field as well, writing, “4x Pro Bowl RB Nick Chubb announced his retirement, via his IG. One of the great runners of the past decade, who did it right – on and off the field.”

Marcus Mosher of FanSided revealed what an anomaly Chubb had been throughout his career. He wrote, “Hall of Fame talent who was still successful despite two injuries that should have been career-ending. One of my favorite RBs of all-time.”
But his career didn’t end with the Browns only. After injuries derailed his final two seasons with the franchise, he had a swansong with the Houston Texans last season. With the mystery surrounding Joe Mixon, Chubb became an integral part of the Texans’ offense, starting nine games for them.

Even in the final stage of his career, he was able to give them 506 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 122 carries. As a result, some Texans fans celebrated his accomplishments too, adding, “Damn. Congrats on a successful career, Nick Chubb. Still had some spryness to him in that NE game, wish he would’ve gotten some more carries then.”
Some people remained disappointed that his career was derailed so heavily by injuries, with Nico ‘Elite Takes’ taking note, “It really hurts me how that injury cooked his career. One of the best rushers of this era.”
Others followed a similar line of thinking, with Alex Insdorf claiming, “Special, special player before *the* injury. Will remember him fondly.”

Even the Pro Football Writers’ Association took note of his accomplishments, with Jason Aponte writing, “Nick Chubb will forever be a baller. Salute!”
During his four-season run from 2019 to 2023, Chubb finished as a top-8 running back in the league on PFN’s RB Impact Metric. In 2021 and 2022, he was ranked as the second-best running back in the league with impact scores of 83.9 and 87.5, respectively.

Chubb’s iconic run took a big hit in September 2023 when he suffered a gruesome season-ending knee injury following a hit from former Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Chubb tore his MCL, ACL, and damaged his meniscus as well as his medial capsule in that game, and he was never the same again. That injury likely played the main role in his early retirement from the NFL.
It remains to be seen what comes next for Chubb in his career. But for the time being, the entire league is celebrating his storied career as he rides off into the sunset.
