It might have been over three decades since they won back-to-back championships, but the power struggle between Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones over whose role was bigger in their triumph has persisted through the years.
Now, after the legendary head coach brought some tangible evidence to support his side of the story, a former Cincinnati Bengals superstar has delivered his verdict on the matter.
Jimmy Johnson Called out Jerry Jones’ Bluff
Beyond coaching the team to victories in Super Bowls 27 and 28, Johnson argued that he played a major role in building the roster and staff as well. Jones, on the other hand, has continued to stake his claim.
Recently, Johnson released an image from his contract that spelled out his responsibilities in explicit detail. It gave credence to the idea that his role was far more expansive for the Cowboys.
The terms of the contract were:
(1) No assistant football coach, trainer, equipment man, or strength coach shall be fired or employed by Employer without the prior approval of Johnson.
(2) Johnson shall have the right of prior approval with respect to the acquisition, releasing, and trading of all football players of the Dallas Cowboys.
(3) Johnson shall have complete control of all assistant coaches, players, trainers, and equipment men during training, practice, preparation for, and the actual playing of games.

Now, legendary wide receiver Chad Johnson has offered his opinions on the matter. Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe was explaining the situation to Ochocinco on the latest episode of the “Nightcap” podcast before claiming that Jones is finally starting to understand the value of coaching in the NFL.
“Hell nah… he hasn’t changed,” Johnson exclaimed, still unconvinced that the owner of the Cowboys had wised up over the years.
Then, the Bengals legend also mocked the show’s third host, Joe Johnson, who is a Cowboys fan, by adding, “Hey, Joe, that’s your owner, though.”

It had seemed like the situation had come to a resolution when Johnson was inducted into the Cowboys Ring of Honor in 2023. However, as neither side has chosen to remain silent, the conflict continues to drag on.

For Jones, it could be a major problem, as the team was drawing rave reviews for a drama-free offseason. Instead, the focus had been squarely on the football field, with the bulk of the additions made to the defense.
For a unit that ranked dead last on PFN’s Defense Impact Metric, those additions could vault the team back into playoff contention after missing it in back-to-back seasons.

Moreover, pertinent to the value of coaching, one of the biggest changes on that end was replacing Matt Eberflus with Christian Parker as the new defensive coordinator.
