‘Inherited Money Is Not Girl Power’ – Jason Whitlock Rips Colts Owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon for ‘Cosplaying’ As a Coach on Sideline

Jason Whitlock blasts Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon, calling her out for “cosplaying” as a coach.

Jason Whitlock took aim at Indianapolis Colts CEO Carlie Irsay-Gordon, criticizing her visible presence on the sidelines in preseason and questioning how sports media portrays her role.

Whitlock argued that Irsay-Gordon’s position is largely a product of family ownership rather than something she built herself, and he took particular issue with her wearing a headset and taking notes during NFL games.

Why Jason Whitlock’s Criticizing Colts Owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon

Speaking on his show, ‘Fearless with Jason Whitlock,’ he compared Irsay-Gordon with other prominent women who inherited control of major sports franchises.

He argued that the media often frames family succession as a symbol of female empowerment while overlooking the role of inherited wealth.

“A year ago, the New York Times anointed her the NFL’s atypical owner, which is press speak for heiress. She stands on the sideline in a coach’s headset she does not speak into. She scribbles notes between plays,” Whitlock said.

Whitlock pointed out that Robert Irsay originally bought the Colts before his son, Jim Irsay, inherited the team. He argued that Jim Irsay’s success was helped significantly by landing Peyton Manning, who eventually led the franchise to a Super Bowl win.

“Carlie inherited the same throne. She has not inherited the luck as of yet. Until she does, and if she ever does, take a seat in a suite and get off the sideline, say as little as possible. When, if you land your Peyton Manning, then fine, throw yourself into the lights; until then, sit down,” he said.

Whitlock described her sideline presence as “cosplaying” as a coach and argued that inherited wealth should not be confused with empowerment.

“A woman cosplaying coach for the cameras, daddy’s little girls playing Jerry Jones. So here is my plea… Carlie, get off the sideline and to the media, quit shoving daddy’s little girls down our throats. Inherited money is not girl power. It is not empowerment. It’s nepotism and a headset,” Whitlock added.

Irsay-Gordon Says the Headset Has a Purpose

While Whitlock sees the headset as a publicity stunt, Irsay-Gordon has explained that she uses it for a very different reason.

Her headset does not have an active microphone. Instead, it allows her to listen to the communication between the coaching staff and players during games. The goal, according to Irsay-Gordon and the Colts, is to gain a better understanding of how the team operates and evaluate coaching decisions.

Head coach Shane Steichen, offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, and players like safety Cam Bynum have publicly praised her presence, noting that she actively attends scheme meetings, takes playbook notes, and works out alongside players during OTAs

That creates a clear divide in how Irsay-Gordon’s presence is viewed.

To Whitlock, the sideline role represents an owner trying to “cosplay” as a coach. To the Colts, it is part of an owner becoming more informed about the football operation she oversees.

For Irsay-Gordon, the debate is unlikely to disappear anytime soon. Her position comes with an undeniable family connection to the franchise, but how she uses it, and whether the Colts eventually find sustained success under her leadership, will ultimately shape her legacy.
